A purity test is a ridiculous idea.

But is it too much to ask for some core principles?

The test is a joke. Typical GOP strawman stuff. But, if they make a test that can identify anarcho-capitalists and the GOP can purge itself of them,that would be a good thing.

parsy, the democrat

That was my initial reaction. After reading it however i don’t see anything in there a conservative should disagree with. Should they disagree with a few,that’s fine. I wouldn’t want to belong to a one brained society.

Purity - no.

But I am for a Majority test, that is you have to have a majority of beliefs that are Conservative.

I tend to be almost unyielding on economic/military/ foreign policy matter and movable on social issues people espouse.

We have to have some process/mechanics to prevent infiltration’s like Sozzafava from getting into the game and screwing up what we are trying to do.

I guess I object to the phrase “purity test”.

What a moronic idea.

It makes the GOP sound like some fundamentalist bunch of whackos.

(1) Smaller government, smaller national debt, lower deficits and lower taxes by opposing bills like Obama's "stimulus" bill

That is an absolute. Anyone who does not support fiscal responsibility is not a conservative and will not have my support.

(2) Market-based health care reform and oppose Obama-style government run healthcare;

See #1. This is merely a subset.

(3) Market-based energy reforms by opposing cap and trade legislation;

Not critical, but any conservative is VERY likely to oppose the silliness of "cap and trade".

(4) Workers' right to secret ballot by opposing card check

Another absolute. Someone who opposes the secret ballot cannot be trusted in any way.

(5) Legal immigration and assimilation into American society by opposing amnesty for illegal immigrants;

Again, an absolute. The rule of law is essential and we cannot reward those who violate our laws.

(6) Victory in Iraq and Afghanistan by supporting military-recommended troop surges;

Not quite an absolute, but pretty close.

(7) Containment of Iran and North Korea, particularly effective action to eliminate their nuclear weapons threat

This is a tricky one, and I'd prefer someone discrete enough not to discuss the topic ... then we need to support Israel, support covert operations, or support their opposition to solve the problem quietly or at least deniably.

(8) Retention of the Defense of Marriage Act;

This act shouldn't be necessary, but it is. We should keep it, but it's not quite an absolute.

(9) Protecting the lives of vulnerable persons by opposing health care rationing and denial of health care and government funding of abortion; and

Another absolute.

(10) The right to keep and bear arms by opposing government restrictions on gun ownership

Again, the Constitution is an absolute. Anyone who wants to work around that document or ignore parts of it will not have my support.

"President Ronald Reagan believed, as a result, that someone who agreed with him 8 out of 10 times was his friend, not his opponent," the resolution states.

I guess I'm a moderate compared to Reagan. I'd support someone who matched the American position on the right six of the ten issues.

The language of the poll specifically included the note that “someone who agrees with me 8 out of 10 times is my friend.” That’s a reason to vote for a “purity” test - how else do you know what you agree on unless the principles are, at least, articulated?

No one, even the great RR, is going to be completely “pure” sufficient to please all the people, all the time. This is one of the reasons we LOSE!

Let’s get back to basics—limited government, low personal and corporate taxes, fiscal responsibility....

Then we can ice the cake!

Me too, although I haven’t looked at it yet. The “test” might not be repellant , but the “purity” requirement certainly is.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH A SET OF DECENT BELIEFS. WE BELIEVE IN NOTHING TODAY AND LOOK WHERE WE ARE, ON THE ROAD TO DISASTER OR WORSE.

Kind of reminds me of the "purity rings" high school girls wear.

I think there can be an appropriate lapel pin, ring, tie/tie clasp, or in ladies' contexts a brooch or kerchief which bears a characteristic symbol -- how about the "Don't Tread on Me" coiled snake?

Picture yellow-enameled lapel pin of the flag.

Picture a silver or gold clasp with a coiled snake and the words beneath it.

Gotta be something that causes those Washington politicians -- and elsewhere -- who take that pledge to be a walking billboard for it.

Those who wear it salute in passing others who do too.

Hey, we're flying the flag at all our rallies right? I wore mine as a cape when I marched on 9/12.

So, Congressman/Senator, are you for us or against us?

TAKE THE PLEDGE. WEAR THE BLING!

FReegards!
