The Point: SNL Skit a Warning for Obama?
Sphere ^ | NOvember 23, 2009 | Steve Pendlebury

It's always been a good sign for "Saturday Night Live" when people are still talking about the show on Monday morning. That's happening more often now that the venerable comedy program is sharpening its satire of President Barack Obama.

This weekend's show opened with a parody of Obama's news conference with China's president that included jabs at the administration's spending on economic stimulus, health care reform, bailouts and Cash for Clunkers. America's $800 billion debt to China was the butt of many jokes.

This comes from the top stories on AOL.com's IE opening page, meaning it's got a lot of coverage. There's also a poll on whether it's funny or not (83% say yes) and whether the skit signals trouble for the Illegal Alien, with 79% saying yes.

especially with the shot at Michelle Obama.

I was surprised by that.

SNL isn’t some liberal bastion as some claim. They tore Al Gore apart in 2000(some actually blamed their debate sketches of him for costing Gore the election). They went after Kerry in 2004. They’ve made Biden look like a buffoon. Even Jon Lovitz’s Dukakis was pretty biting. They went after Bill Clinton pretty good, Hillary too. They’ll make fun of both sides. I mean, Darrell Hammond savaged Clinton and Amy Poehler’s Hillary wasn’t exactly complimentary.

The difference is that for whatever reason they have never really gone after Obama. I think part of it is the race thing, although they have gone after Revs Jackson and Sharpton pretty tough so maybe that’s not it.

Partially I think it’s that they have a younger auidence and Obama is divine among the young so they saw it as a bad move with their viewers. That and Fred Armisen does a horrible impression.

But they can read the newspapers. When only 48% of the country approves of the President, it means there’s a whole lot of people out there who are willing to laugh at him. They can look at the jobs figures, the deficit, the spending, etc...

I’d expect more of this if things ocntinue as they are.

No need to get excited about some mythical “wind change” at SNL. They are doing the obligatory one or two comedy sketches that give the appearance of poking at Obama but not really.

When push comes to shove, SNL will be there ready and willing for the Obama administration.

...the Tea Parties/Beck/Polls haven’t escaped SNL/NBC’s attention....they know that something is brewing in America and they’re trying to catch the curve of this trend...the MSM networks are basically a flock of carnivorious sheep....I look for more TV coverage of The One to turn negative.

“Will you kiss me?”
“Will you take me out for dinner and a movie?”
“Do I look like Mrs Obama”

“Then why are you trying to [do sex to] me?”

Ummm, I can’t agree with you on that.

From everything I’ve seen, GE is positioning itself to be the master of all government corporations in the “new future” our “dear leader” is promising us. To wit:

1: Keeper and database administrator of all computerized medical records
2: Chief domestic windmill producer
3: Ministry of Propaganda a la CNBC, NBC, MSNBC
4: probably a few more I am missing

Considering that GE took a giant slug of TARP money for enormous defaults in GE capital and that the government now owns a big part of GE...

And that their stock, which since 2000 hasn’t been anywhere near the 55 it used to trade for...

IMHO Immelt sees his window of salvation from becoming the government’s “master corporate entity” in whatever ghoulish way one might imagine the likes of Krupps or I.G. Farben being for....that earlier regime.

As for employment or unemployment, as US corporations enter this “new era”, I strongly believe whatever domestic employment they provide will take a very weak back seat to whether or not they survive or whether the gov’t *allows* them to survive. Yeah, sure, if things pick up they will hire people. Hopefully (for them) at a much lower wage since the number of available bodies will likely triple. The jobs they provide or don’t provide could hardly concern them any less. This, by the way, does not make them “evil” and I am not making that suggestion in any way. As corporations they are beholden to shareholders and are mandated to make profits, not employ people unproductively.

So again I say, I remain totally surprised they allowed this to air.

I agree. Remember the one skit last year about the economic meltdown that had Soros identified as "Owner, Democratic Party"?

After that, a whole lotta nothin'.

>> Obama is divine among the young

That’s my pet theory too, for why SNL has gone easy on Bambi.

But as more of the young face unemployment — and those that are employed face dimming prospects for advancement — their hopey changey feelgood euphoria is dissipating somewhat. And they’re not, like, down with that — nor with Bambi for causing it. :-)

The skit was amazingly funny, but they need to get someone who can actually do Obama, that guy is horrible at it.

1. SNL IS a bastion of liberalism.

2. Only 1% of America watches that drivel.

3. SNL is irrelevant.

Period.

I wonder when someone at SNL/NBC will actually get the idea “hey, ya know if she were actually President and we had 4 whole years to do sketches on her every week, just think how much money we’d make. Sure, we like Barry and and all, but he’s a pretty boring guy lets face it. He won’t juice our ratings like the Barracuda”.

I think if Palin were President SNL would be one of the top 10 shows on TV for her entire term. Not just late night. All of TV. It could be a CSI or Grey’s Anatomy level hit. Tina Fey would become the biggest star on TV. 30 Rock’s ratings would increase by at least 50% if not more.

Someone at NBC has to figure this out sooner or later.
