'Twilight Saga': Is 'New Moon' Selling Sex or Pushing Chastity?
ABC News ^ | 11/23/09 | DAN HARRIS

"The Twilight Saga: New Moon" features long, steamy, smoldering gazes by handsome, shirtless young men who are vampires or werewolves.

Despite those lingering, lustful looks the film includes only four kisses and not a single sex scene.

Women and girls, who made up 80 percent of the opening weekend audience, said that is one reason "The Twilight Saga" appeals to them.

"I actually like that, the fact that they don't have bedroom scenes or anything," Gabrielle Rivera, 15, said.

Clearly the storyline is working. In the first three days, the box office raked in $140.7 million, according to studio estimates.

That places "New Moon" third behind "The Dark Knight" and "Spider-Man 3" on the highest-earning films for an opening weekend on the domestic charts.

The movies are based on the "Twilight" books, written by Stephanie Meyer.

Meyer, a Mormon, wrote her lead character, Edward, to be a chaste and noble protector of his love interest, Bella.

This may explain why the movie is a hit among so-called "Twilight Moms" who have described Edward as "the perfect man."

Well, the wife and daughters are all going to see it later this week.

Me? I’ll throw an old B/W WW II movie in the DVD player while they’re gone.

It's about sex, all modern day vampyre stories have had a sexuality about it. However it is easy justify being seduced by a vampyre because you do not have accept responsibility for you actions.

My oldest daughter has read all the books and WARNING DON”T READ ON IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW!!

In book #4, IIRC, they author reveals a *1* line reference to the *MARRIED* lead characters having sex.

At which time the female becomes, not only pregnant but, also a VAMPIRE, herself.

Have you read the books? Edward, the protagonist, refuses to have sex with Bella unless and until they are married. The only sex scene in this series is post marriage.

We went to the movies to see ‘2012’ Sat. night, which turned out to be pretty boring. The lines of girls and women to see ‘New Moon’ were unbelievable. We couldn’t even get a parking space for a while.

I’m going to see it. I could use some escapism right now, and I like the idea of no sex in the movie.

My wife thinks this Twilight stuff is the authors Mormon Propaganda. She is shocked at the reaction of women in the United States. She calls it the end of Feminism.

The stories are all about a girl doing everything her obsessive boyfriend says. He even locks her up at his sisters house when he goes out of town. He even destroys her car so she cant go see another boy.

Women and girls love this stuff. She thinks it shows a deep truth about what women really want. They want to be dominated. She is horrified.

I am more amused.

Feminism was a marxist utopian wet dream. It had no real basis in reality.

I know several mothers who wouldn’t let their “tween” read the fourth in the series because of it’s graphic honeymoon scenes, but at least they were truly “honeymoon” scenes. I’ve read all four books and watched both movies, (we took my husband’s niece, who is 11 to New Moon - I had no interest the movie), and overall, considering the nature of the majority of movies out there, Edward is presented as a chaste “hero”.

Have you read the books? i am not sure how much sense the story will make without having read them, but i highly recommend the books and the movies. My oldest daughter last year had mentioned wanting to read some book about a vampire, her friends at college had suggested it. i pooh poohed it and said oh for heavens sake that sounds stupid. then last summer when we were on vacation i went into a book store and picked up some novels for beach reading, one happened to be twilight, i didn’t even realize that was what she had been talking about. She saw it and said, OMG you said that was STUPID, and i said well turns out it’s GOOD!! LOL! we read all 4 books, i read and then handed off to my 21 yo who then handed to the 15 yo. It is escapism pure and simple and they are extremely enjoyable. i highly recommend it!

Your sister is mistaken, that it not a remotely accurate depiction of the series at all.

My son (21) took his girlfriend to see it (she had read the books.) He said he had no interest in the movie, but it wasn’t as “bad” (i.e. boring) as he thought it would be.

I can see why girls and women like Edward. BTW, did you have to wait in line?

The movies aren’t bad, I just do not like the actress who plays Bella. I try to support as few films as possible, but having read the book, I felt like New Moon was a “safe” movie to take an 11 year old girl to. :)

Edward is presented as a chaste “hero”.

edward died of the spanish influenza at the age of 17 in 1918. He is a product of the victorian time period and morals, despite being a vampire and immortal.
