As much as I agree with the Governor about his grievances with the fed govt, I hope to God it never comes to Texas trying to secede. I can’t even imagine the suffering and pain that would inflict. First off, the fed govt will not allow it and we will have another civil war and I can’t even imagine our military having to go to war against their fellow Texans. I’m not sure my husband wouldn’t be a conscientious objector as he’s said things to that effect before about ever having to go up against his fellow Americans in a civil war. But the fed govt has the U.S. military as an instrument that would put down the civil war but not without much bloodshed. I can’t even contemplate such a scenario. Secondly, not everyone in Texas would be on board with such a things. There would be internal fighting as well as external force to take them down. Too terrible to even think about for long.
“That treaty was submitted to the Senate on April 22, 1844, with the presidential message of the same date (Executive Journal, VI, 257-61); and it was rejected by the Senate by a vote of sixteen ayes to thirty-five noes on the following June 8 (ibid., 311-12). “

Texas isn’t going to secede. There have been secessionist in Texas since it’s formation I guess. They come and go. Search the internet and you’ll find different groups, some even claiming to be the legit gov’t of the State of Texas with their own governor, etc. A few years back the state chased a few of them up into the Davis Mountains. They were eventaully caught and the leader has since died, I believe. The money and abilities aren’t there to secede, imo.
Pssst - secession does not have to be violent. And given current opinion polls in the country, most of the rest of the US would apparently be happy to see us go.
In fact, I’m reasonably sure that the current US government wouldn’t stop us - first because they’re a form of pacifist, and second because it would remove a huge source of opposition to their policies in the House.
