A lawyer for one of the five men facing trial for the Sept. 11 attacks says the men plan to plead not guilty and use the trial venue to express their political views.
Attorney Scott Fenstermaker said his client Ali Abd al-Aziz Ali and the others will not deny their role in the 2001 attacks but will tell the jury "why they did it."
He said that the men will explain "their assessment of American foreign policy."
Fenstermaker met with Ali last week at the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. He has not spoken with the others but said the men have discussed the trial among themselves.
The Justice Department announced earlier this month that the men would face a civilian federal trial in a New York City courthouse. The department did not immediately respond to a call seeking comment.

That alone may take YEARS to determine...then this foolishness will cause a request for change of venue, and what city (besides San Fran, they aren’t really a part of the US anymore I think) in this country would take them?? EVERYONE on the planet knows about 9/11. Except maybe some hermits in the Appalachian Mountains, living in caves...

A courtroom is not a place for a defendant to explain "why I did it", unless the "why" is to demonstrate a legal lack of guilt of a specific charge; think self defense, lesser charge (2nd degree rather than 1st degree), etc.. Of course, if a defendant believes he is guilty of a lesser charge, the attorney is obligated to pursue a plea bargain.
But "to embarrass the prosecution" is not a legitimate reason for the "why I did it" bit.
A good prosecution will object to any of this crap as irrelevant. A good judge will sustain.
Once all these terrorists are acquitted, 0bama will of course blame Bush, stating that “had Bush only ‘respected the Constitution’ and hadn’t ‘tortured’ those suspects, they would have been convicted.”

Same here. One relative insists on constantly defending Obama at every turn and will bring him up in every conversation, even when he is not the topic of discussion. It has gotten so bad that I had to tell them our communication will be kept very short in the future if they insist on bringing him up with me even after I have repeatedly requested they not do it. It is like trying to communicate with a person involved in a cult. They are in denial and refuse to listen to the truth.
