In town to give a talk on civility, I was surrounded by women who wondered what I thought of Sarah Palin's Newsweek cover.
"Why aren't women coming to her defense?" they asked. "Why are the media being so rough on Sarah?"
Having been enjoying a self-imposed moratorium on all things Palin, declining numerous interviews to discuss her latest self-promotional tour, I was surprised by the questions. My thoughts lately have drifted toward the sense that, though Palin is very much a celebrity, she's no longer running for public office, at least officially. Ergo, radar gets a rest.
As for her book ... right after I finish "Ulysses."
But the questions - and the passion with which they were proffered - intrigued me. Are the media treating her unfairly? Are they "bashing" Palin, as her supporters describe any criticism? Was the Newsweek cover sexist?
Call me a guy, but give me a break.
Sarah Palin is the luckiest woman on the planet.
Hats off to the girl from Wasilla who, slightly more than a year ago, was virtually unknown, is now on the cover of Newsweek, hawking a book for which she was paid a few million, drawing huge crowds and getting the kind of free publicity most celebrities have to jump on Oprah's couch to get.
Oh, and, yes, she got to sit on Oprah's set as well. And we're supposed to defend/feel sorry for/protect Sarah from ... what? Wild success, popularity and riches? You must be joking.
I don't doubt the sincerity of those who feel compelled to defend Palin.
Women, especially, feel personally diminished when a female candidate is treated unfairly.

She despises Palin.
Personally I think Kathleen Parker should be banned from FR.
She’s just a spewer of hate with no upside.
Sarah Palin has worked damn hard for everything she’s got, and is one of the most wrongfully reviled people on the planet.
Kathleen Parker - on the other hand - can’t even write well.
Agreed!!!
Ah, jealousy is a beautiful thing to watch. Oh, yes, BTW, what was the date that ole Kathleen appeared on Oprah, was interviewed by O’Reilly, had a book at #1 on Amazon before it was published....didn’t happen you say? Well, well, well. Guess Kathleen has a little bit of catching up to do.
He, he he.
This article is utterly without any intellectual merit. It is a childish combination of bitchy jealousy and ignorance.
Kathleen, what’s Palin complaining about?
Her poll numbers this last week are literally off the charts. (Fox News F/UF among indies 49/38, Rasmussen overall F/UF 51/43 and ABC finding that one in two female indie voters would presently cast a vote for Palin)
There’d be no point in banning her, the forum can deal with diverse opinions. On the other hand, I’m not sure why she has risen to the level she has as a pundit. Speaking for myself, I usually don’t come away with any more knowledge after reading anything she has written.
It's a book tour, they are common in our society. How old is Kathleen Parker? Or did she just immigrate to the US?
Spot on! Her green slip is showing.

Really good!!!
Anyone who uses the word “ergo” in their writing is not to be taken seriously. Of course, Kathleen Parker, who fancies herself the poor man’s Maureen Dowd, is never to be taken seriously.
her book has sold 300K already. People in that number dont buy a book written by someone they are not interested in.
Does anyone actually believe this?
I think Parker is just saying this as an excuse to bash Palin.
Clearly, this woman has issues.
re: Does anyone actually believe this?
I have noticed over the years that liberals tend to write a news story the way they would like the situation to have been, not the way it was. They have lost all semblance of objectivity. The spin when they can and outright lie the rest of the time. And once one of them has told the lie it becomes truth for everyone else on down the line.
THEN OFF WITH HER HEAD!
Hm. Isn't any man who is cognizant of Maureen Dowd a "Poor Man"?
That's like describing someone as a Poor Man's Helen Thomas!
Parker’s a virulent Romneyite, and has been hurling peanuts at Sarah Palin ever since McCain selected her as his running mate.
