Apple Voiding Smokers' Warranties?
Slashdot ^ | 11/21/9 | Soulskill

Mr2001 writes

"Consumerist reports that Apple is refusing to work on computers that have been used in smoking households. 'The Apple store called and informed me that due to the computer having been used in a house where there was smoking, [the warranty has been voided] and they refuse to work on the machine "due to health risks of second hand smoke,"' wrote one customer. Another said, 'When I asked for an explanation, she said [the owner of the iMac is] a smoker and it's contaminated with cigarette smoke, which they consider a bio-hazard! I checked my Applecare warranty and it says nothing about not honoring warranties if the owner is a smoker.' Apple claims that honoring the warranty would be an OSHA violation. (Remember when they claimed enabling 802.11n for free would be a Sarbanes-Oxley violation?)"

“Have you ever tried to wash the windows of a smoker? There is a very unpleasant yellow sludge that is almost impossible to remove expecially in fabrics!!”

Use Ajax and a Brillo pad soaked in Doc’s Deer Scents. Works every time. If that’s not handy, try a jackhammer or a Remington 870 with birdshot. A skunk dipped in a bucket of bilge water is also effective.

I’ve not tried the skunk trick yet. None of the others worked. Thanks!

Well, it is a perfect illustration of the borderline deviance which is molding the mind of the Apple fanboy.

I like Macs for certain tasks. I even like the high-tech logistics of their stores. (You never go to a checkout counter; the person helping you checks you out wirelessly right there where the product is. Quick and slick.) All that said, given the typical Apple Store employee, I have NO problem believing this. It’s STOOPID in the extreme, but completely believable.

Kinda what I’d expect from a company with Al Gore on their board.

That policy will change on the day after an Apple technician gets a MacBook smashed on his head.

Why anyone would buy an Apple in the first place is beyond me. But this new policy is about as absurd as it gets.

Somebody, quick!!
Give this info to Rush. He loves his Apple computers so much, wonder how he keeps his cigar smoke away from his puter?
Will he accept the fact that his warranty is no good? Might make for interesting talk next week.

Forty years ago we found computers would gag on perfume and cigarette smoke.
Thirty years we found we could crash the company computer by holding one lit cigarette over the cooling air intake.

Having worked on computers as a certified tech for years (not that it matters) and have worked on PC’s of smokers. Computers have fans which if the computer is on the desk suck all the surrounding air and smoke into the computer case.

The air is drawn in through in the front and out through the power supply. As the tar and nicotine makes it way through it sticks to everything but especially the CPU fan and the power supply fan. Smoke particles impact the fans and are removed from the air by impact. If the user is a heavy smoker the entire inside of the machine is coated with goo.

I have seen CPU fans completely covered with tar so that they are completely solid and filled with tar. The power supply fans no longer turn and covered with goo.

I don’t smoke however I have friends that do. I don’t dislike smokers either. If you have to get inside the case of a really heavy smoker’s computer it is really intolerable. Not all of them but some are.

You can work smoker’s PC’s but you can really get sick and nauseous. Most of the time you can bear it but the occasional computer from a really heavy smoker is just horrible. I can understand why they don’t want to work on them. I suppose that they could make a booth with fans to suck the smell outside while they have to work on them as workaround.

The smoke gets into the DVD/CD drives and gets on the read/write heads and any moving parts and prevents the parts from being cooled down. I’m quite sure that the expense of maintaining a smoker’s computer has to be more costly since parts will be ruined more frequently.

Yes, ammonia does cut the goo in the computer but wouldn’t be able to be used since it most likely destroy components in the process. Most smokers since they are addicted and need their drug don’t realize how difficult it is for a non-smoker to deal with the residue. I have put on my crash helmet and await the insults of the smoking crowd. Fire away. Smoke’em if you got’em. That is all.

I claim BS from MDS. I have Macs, all covered under AppleCare. I have sent machines to Apple, and I am a CIGAR smoker. I have never had a refusal of service. I have had them fully replace items, but it had nothing to with smoke. I will say that I have owned more than 50 Macs over the years... and have only used AppleCare 6 times in 25 years! Most recently to replace a screen damaged by accident, but replaced at no charge. They even paid to pick it up and return it, and provided a box with cushion, since I had no original.

It's just like the Palin haters. There's no reason, it just is...

Get a Mac and you'll never go back!

Good for Apple.

Why should responsible users be penalized because of the actions of others.

You sound like the typical wuss that’s all. There is no shortage of those. Good luck to you the next time you work on a smokers PC in your pink hazmat suite.

This sounds like BS. I will believe it when I see proof.

As for Apple being liberal, it sure is. Do you use Microsoft products? Do you somehow think they are different at MS? I am sure there have been hundreds of millions of grants from Microsoft over the years to liberal causes and organizations that would make you blanch.

And the Consumerist? The one owned by Consumers Union that also owns Greenerchoices with all their global warming BS and the same ones that voted Halliburton to be the worst companyin the USA back in 2007?

Are those the people you really want to come on to Free Republic and advocate for as a reliable source?

Just sayin, jessduntno.
