Religious leaders vow civil disobedience
Washington Times ^ | 11/21/2009 | Julia Duin

More than 150 leaders across a spectrum of conservative Christianity on Friday released a 4,700-word document vowing civil disobedience if they are forced to take part in "anti-life acts" or bless gay marriages.

Called the "Manhattan Declaration," the six-page, single-spaced document was drafted by Prison Fellowship founder Charles Colson, an evangelical, and Princeton University professor Robert P. George, a Roman Catholic, and included a bevy of Catholic, Anglican and Orthodox bishops, archbishops and cardinals as signatories along with dozens of clergy and laity.

Archbishop of Washington Donald W. Wuerl is one of the signatories.

"Throughout the centuries, Christianity has taught that civil disobedience is not only permitted, but sometimes required," says the document which cited civil rights icon Martin Luther King and his willingness to go to jail for his beliefs.

"Because we honor justice and the common good," it states, "we will not comply with any edict that purports to compel our institutions to participate in abortions, embryo-destructive research, assisted suicide or euthanasia or any other anti-life act; nor will we bend to any rule purporting to force us to bless immoral sexual partnerships, treat them as marriages or the equivalent, or refrain from proclaiming the truth, as we know it, about morality and immorality and marriage and the family."

When pressed to say what sorts of civil disobedience the writers were proposing, its originators were vague on the details at Friday's news conference during which the document was released.

There are only two viable parties because they have rigged the electoral system up in such a way that even if a third party candidate would get the majority of the popular vote, he/she would still lose.

We have to take back our party from the RINOS.

“...if they are forced to take part in “anti-life acts” or bless gay marriages.”

“Forced”, “civil disobedience”? Grounds for all out War as far as I’m concerned.

The manifesto was principally authored by Charles Colson and Robert George, not the bishops and the others, who came on as signatories. All of them are long-time opponents of abortioon and the gay agenda. The intent, I believe, is to inform and inspire more Evalgelical-Catholic unity on key issues, not to promote a denominational or partisan agenda, properly so called.

In fact, I believe the signatories would strongly object if anyone tried to steer it into a narrowly denominational or partisan direction. This is a call to Christ and a call to principles, which merits fraternal support. I would not disparage it.

I'm all for it. We have to convert RINOs and that's probably easier said than done.

Actually, Obama, Reid, and Pelosi are probably doing a better job of it than the rest of us can do.

If they’d have asked me, I’d have signed too! GOOD job! I think they’ll have to MEAN it and DO it before it’s over.

Posted on the other thread, but I’ll post it here as well:

A couple of questions:

1. What does this document explicitly require of the signer?

2. Will its prominent signers have to change anything they’ve been doing in the political arena?

3. How well does their performance over the last few years match up with its words?

Can Mr. Colson and Mr. George defend the truthfulness of this phrase?

After the judicial imposition of "same-sex marriage" in Massachusetts, for example...

“Those who deliberately make choices that result in the evil party coming to power - (either by not voting, voting for a candidate in a non-viable political party, or voting for any ‘RAT) - have my everlasting contempt. “

What do you think a vote is?

“Always vote for principle, though you may vote alone, and you may cherish the sweetest reflection that your vote is never lost.” - President John Q. Adams

If the Pubbie is just as or nearly as evil and against what you believe in as the Democrat, and many are, it is your solemn duty as a citizen of these United States to vote your conscience. I did not vote for McCain last year (I voted Constitution Party - a candidate who did NOT want to destroy the country). Felt good. If Palin had been at the top of the ticket, I would likely have voted Republican in 2008, but a McCain, Romney, or Guiliani will not only never get my vote, but they are cordially invited to go straight to hell.

Not doing so has put us in this situation. One with what effectively is a mono-party with communist and socialist wings.

Mitt Romney, Not the Mass Supreme Judicial Court, Imposed Gay Marriage on The Citizens of Mass.

Here is the entire “Joint Letter to Governor Mitt Romney from Pro-Family Leaders” that describes this issue in more depth.

There may be an indirect connection to Romney because they share a PR guy. If so, I’ll wait to see if any complications arise. In the meantime, I’ll trust Chuck Colson and Robert P. George, identified as the authors of this statement. There aren’t two better or more trustworthy people around, on the issues of life and religious freedom. One an Evangelical, the other a conservative Catholic.

By the way, the religious leaders who have covered for Mitt Romney over and over again, a number of whom are original signatories of this document, (and who have been financial beneficiaries the largesse of Mr. Romney and his closest allies), were ALL fully informed, many, many times, of the truth of his actions in using the power of his office to implement gay "marriage."

Brave souls challenged them, and were rewarded for their principled boldness with either scorn, silence, or banishment from the ranks of presumed leadership.

Excellent points. I think these articles assemble good evidence and reasonable legal arguments that Romney acted very wrongly in this case.

Do you have plans to forward these points to Robert George or Chuck Colson? They should find this a valuable correction.
