WASHINGTON, Nov 18 (Reuters) - U.S. Republican Senator John McCain on Wednesday strongly defended the top advisers from his 2008 presidential campaign in the face of sharp criticism from his vice presidential running mate, Sarah Palin.
McCain, in a telephone interview with Reuters, singled out campaign manager Steve Schmidt and senior adviser Nicolle Wallace for praise after Palin blasted the pair in her memoir, "Going Rogue: An American Life."
"There's been a lot of dust flying around in the last few days and I just wanted to mention that I have the highest regard for Steve Schmidt and Nicolle Wallace and the rest of the team ... and I appreciated all the hard work and everything they did to help the campaign," he said.
"I think it's just time to move on," he said.

Has he also praised his campaign staffers who jumped ship after he got the nomination and then went to work on the Obama campaign?
They did such a fine job you lost, idjit.
There got that out of my system.
Maybe you could suggest that to your staff, Senator.
He hitched his wagon to all of them, now he has to deal with the aftermath.. karma.
McCain has praised everybody, including Sarah Palin. A politician doesn’t attack their own picks for their campaign staff — George Allen never called out his lousy campaign manager in Virginia either. It’s just not done, because the press spins it bad for Republicans, and there is some sort of code among campaign workers so if you attack one, it’s hard to get others to help.
Hopefully, Wallce and Schmidt will have a bit of a hard time finding new work, given how badly they botched the campaign.
It is interesting moreso that McCain, while saying nice things about them, does NOT defend them against any of the charges.
No JUANnabies.
Yeah, John, those guys did a great job circle-jerking their way to the most inept and bizarre presidential campaign I can recall. Thanks to them I am embarrassed to admit I supported you.
The Wallace gal was formerly employed by CBS. Great judgment, Senator. Oh, and McKinnon, who could not bring himself to help if Obama was nominated. Sheesh.
we were constantly wondering if mccain want to win the election at all, throughout his campaign. His campaign was poorly run. Noone cared about him before Palin was picked. His campaign was dead
So, McCain demanded these idiots NOT talk to the press about Sarah, and they do, with one going on that lezbo-liberal show to slam Sarah’s book at lies. Then McCain goes public with his praise of these same idiots after they disparage Sarah and go against his request.
McCain is a pantywaste and the two staffers are buttsniffers. Never again!
McCain never defended Sarah after the election in 2008, when she was being blamed by so many for the GOP loss. He was given the opportunity several times on various TV shows, but would only say she was a nice person and that he liked her; never defended her against the nasty comments.
I’m glad McCain has publically defended his former staff, in this instance, as it shows Conservatives just how little he cares about Sarah. .....Hope the folks in AZ vote the scuzz out of office in 2010!
McCain is simply a world class moron that is too stupid to know his campaign was infiltrated by moles bent on sinking him, which is very similar to the RNC “leadership.”
Yeah Juan, you ran a truly GREAT campaign. Some of the clowns who “worked” for you are now working for their REAL candidate—Hussein. They were a big help weren’t they! They no doubt convinced you that Palin was just a knuckle-dragging conservative who had to be properly muzzled and thoroughly betrayed, just to keep her in line. After all, it would have been DEADLY for your election chances to ANNOY those all-important MODERATES! By the way, Juan...how did that work out for you??!!
McCain doesn’t understand what his insiders did to him. He had done to him what he has been doing to the Republican Party for years.
The Schmidt character had been trashing Sarah throughout most of 2009, long before anyone knew what might be in her book. I often thought Schmidt was just getting a few preemptive cheap shots in at Sarah, knowing she'd have a big audience for her book. Schmidt came across to me as a petty, self-absorbed sort concerned about nothing but his own rear end.
And, Juan, who cares what you think? You're not one known to have honest and straightforward motives about anything at all. And the former top aids in your highly unsuccessful presidential campaign are just trying to shift blame for the pathetic campaign they managed, hoping to preserve their reputations for future employment.
