Good God. Are they crazy? I was in an attack squadron during the Seventies when I would think standards would have been even more lax, and I was petrified that I would nod off during mid watch ON A BASE ON A SUNDAY WITH NO FLIGHT OPS!

Maybe it is just me, but I can't see someone being on an attack sub, in the Persian Gulf, nodding off while on watch. Just can't see it.

On a related note, when I was on the Kennedy, they had a guy standing midwatch on the port quarter, and he fell asleep. His buddy came to talk to him, saw he was asleep, and dreamed up a great prank. He snuck over on his hands and knees, tied his buddy's shoelaces together, then went back into the ship and projecting his voice through the hatch said "Man Overboard! Man Overboard!" He said it just loud enough for his buddy to hear through his sound powered phones, and he leaped to his feet falling on his face in the process.

The only problem was someone up on the catwalk above heard the Man Overboard and raised the alarm. The entire task force awoke in the middle of the night and began recovery procedures.

Both sailors were court martialed.

The Hartford's commanding officer, Cmdr. Ryan Brookhart, was relieved of his duties after the accident. He could not immediately be located for comment Wednesday.

Gosh, speakers in a radio room ... There are speaker through the boat. Sonar and Con control the boat not the radio room.

Even at port and starboard watches we never slept because there is always something going on during your watch. If not doing your work, there are drills and younger sailors trying to get “qualified” with you all the time.

The con screwed up and careers ended. Blaming lax crew not the officer of the deck.

The collision caused $2.3 million in damage to the New Orleans, and the cost so far of repairs to the Hartford is $102.6 million, the newspaper reported.

My father's destroyer once ran aground entering Pearl Harbor and it was the Captain's fault not the helmsman. That article made discipline sound lax for a small business let alone a United States Navy vessel.

For the record, the Hartford has a long, long way to go to catch up with the USS Jacksonville (aka USS Crashville) for most peacetime tonnage sunk or damaged. I remember tying them up the night they gutted a Saudi cargo ship.

As a former Chief of the Boat (retired in 1984) I realize and understand the pressure on a submarine crew. That said, there is no excuse for lack of discipline and the CO and COB deserved to be reassigned and they should be court-martialed.
