NEW YORK - Former McCain campaign senior adviser Nicolle Wallace says Sarah Palin's book "Going Rogue" is "based on fabrications," and that the basis for Palin’s depictions of her and former McCain campaign director Steve Schmidt as villains "took place entirely in her imagination."

In a statement to The Rachel Maddow Show, the former McCain spokesperson repeatedly used the word "fiction" to describe Palin's narrative and echoed criticisms by other former McCain staffers.

"She [Palin] probably has a legitimate complaint that things could have been better conceived and executed. A book about that would have been painful but not entirely unfair," Wallace told an msnbc producer in an off-camera, on-the-record interview.

Wallace took particular issue with Palin's version of her interview with Katie Couric interview, which did not cast the former vice presidential candidate in a favorable light.

I’ve never seen anything quite like this, her campaign staff was trying to do her in while they were still working for her. We could all see it, couldn’t quite believe it, but we could see it happening. Then in the aftermath of the campaign we could see the anonymous “McCain staffers” still trying to do her in, and again couldn’t quite believe it.

If I hadn’t seen it myself, I wouldn’t believe it. But I did see it. This is very strange, to see a candidate done in by their own people.

Any candidate who hires these people has just outed himself as complicit in their dirty work.

Palin described thinking the Couric interview would be lighthearted and fun. "It was supposed to be ... a working mom speaking with [another] working mom and the challenges that we have with teenage daughters," she told "The Oprah Winfrey Show" in an interview broadcast Monday.


I know I'm going to get blasted for speaking against Palin but if she actually thought an interview with Couric was going to be "lighthearted and fun," she's not ready for prime time. Seriously, who on this board thought the Couric interview wasn't going to be an ambush?

i thought that response was one of her weaker moments in the Oprah interview... and i don't know if she really thought it was going to be light-hearted and fun... i also thought her reason for not saying what she read (when the Perky One asked her what books and magazines she read) was also on the flimsy side...

This Nicolle Wallace worked for CBS before coming to the McCain campaign.

What a lousy choice, but CBS has ties to the Republican establishment that go back.

I looked in an old 1949 Radio-TV Annual recently and saw that George Bush 41’s father and grandfather of George W. Bush was on the CBS Board of Directors back then.

It was none other than Prescott Bush, who would become a Senator from Connecticut.
