Maybe Obama will have to “bail them out”.
Could this be the pilot project for O’s government support of the news media? It meets the criteria of being a newspaper and hitting a noisy special interest group, while not being as politically mainstream as supporting, say, the NY Times.
It sounds like a case of bad business judgment and overexpansion. The Washington Blade has been around forever—or at least for 40 years, as the article notes.
There’s room for gay newspapers in in the DC area or San Francisco or New York. But it seems doubtful that their plan of gay newspapers in small towns would succeed. Not when even ordinary newspapers in those areas are going under. People want to read about school sports and local activities, not more gay propaganda that they could just as well get by subscribing to The Blade or The NY Times.
When it came to financing, I guess their sponsors couldn’t get it up.....

Window Media LLC had hoped to establish a chain of thriving gay and lesbian journals across the country. However, .... made it impossible for the publisher to maintain its extensive news acquisitions.Window Media owned the Washington Blade, Houston Voice, South Florida Blade, David Atlanta, and 411 Magazine. First off, how many times can you write articles about redecorating your Dining Room, or where Liza Minnelli is appearing at next, until they become utterly boring. And at the same time there's only so much revenue you can get from ads about Sales on Ferns, Black Leather Chaps and 'Pet' Gerbils.
Plus, talk about "financial difficulties", well yeah - duh. How'd you like to be the Owner and have to pay for the Health & Life Insurance for these people and their *partners*. The costs would have been humongous. Motorcycle daredevil Evel Knievel, and those who get shot out of cannons at the circus would get better rates.
An aside: I had a hunch the gay Washington Blade would have problems after Justice David Souter retired.
(hint-hint, wink-wink)
Praise the Lord!
