It sounds like a case of bad business judgment and overexpansion. The Washington Blade has been around forever—or at least for 40 years, as the article notes.

There’s room for gay newspapers in in the DC area or San Francisco or New York. But it seems doubtful that their plan of gay newspapers in small towns would succeed. Not when even ordinary newspapers in those areas are going under. People want to read about school sports and local activities, not more gay propaganda that they could just as well get by subscribing to The Blade or The NY Times.
