Gay newspapers in several U.S. cities, including the Washington Blade shut down on Monday...
See!
And people laughed when I said there'd be major repercussions when Justice David Souter retired.

Well, I guess they just couldn’t keep it up. Newspapering is a hard business. It requires a lot of juice.

Of the 3-7% of the population, what market penetration could they reasonably expect? 3-15% would probably be somewhat reasonable, so if we multiply 7% x 15% we wind up with a best case scenario of ~1% of the population purchasing this paper.

Plus, it was a FREE paper; the only revenue was from advertising. I've walked by one of their paperboxes every day for almost twenty years, and have only ever picked up two copies - one to see what the controversy over placing them in public libraries was, and one when they did a special on Pope Benedict.

I don’t buy the 3-7%, but even at 1-2%, there’s still enough consumers to sustain a worthwhile publication. Have you seen some of the obscure magazines out there? There are multiple magazines for chess enthusiasts alone!

Please don’t use terms like “market penetration.”

How come a Gay paper had trouble with market penetration?

By the way, since they don’t have kids and don’t need to plan for retirement, gays are well-known by marketers for having sizeable disposable incomes relative to their earnings. Why do you think that churches are falling over themselves to be so gay-friendly? They want those wills!

They’re also trendy, which means their purchases are very heavily influenced by marketers.

That’s okay. You can still make some remark about liquifying their assets, filing for Section 8 bankruptcy, or something like that.

Employees at Southern Voice, an Atlanta-based gay paper owned by Window Media, found their offices locked on Monday, and a note posted on the door saying that the company had ceased operation.

Employees, bend over....
