From the viewpoint of McCain and other beltway types things that are totally unthinkable to most of us are things they can live with. McCain may oppose draconian gun control, for example, but he isn't going to die on his porch fighting for the 2nd amendment. Freedom seems to be more of an abstract to some people, I find it to be so with the local GOP machine. They may fight, but they will surrender before they die.
