Dems, GOP split on NY trials of alleged terrorists
Associated Press ^ | November 15, 2009 | Jim Abrams

Bringing those accused in the Sept. 11 attacks to New York for trial would increase the security threat to the city and give radical Islamists a platform to propagate their ideology, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani said Sunday.

Giuliani's view that the Obama administration is erring in trying Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and four others near the site of the World Trade Center was echoed by other Republicans on the Sunday news programs.

Democrats defended the decision of Attorney General Eric Holder to try the five in New York where more than 2,000 civilians were killed on Sept. 11. If someone murders Americans in this country, they should be tried in the U.S., said Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

"I don't think we should run and hide and cower. Let's use our system," Leahy said.

Republicans argued that the five are war criminals and should be tried in the military tribunals where other Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, detainees will be judged. They disputed administration arguments that these five were conspirators to a crime committed on American soil.

"What the Obama administration is telling us loud and clear is that both in substance and reality the war on terror from their point of view is over," Giuliani said. Moving the case to a civilian court, he said, "seems to be an overconcern with the rights of terrorists and a lack of concern for the rights of the public."

The former mayor was similarly critical of the administration's handling of the shooting spree at Fort Hood last week. President Barack Obama, he said, "doesn't get the fact that there is an Islamic war against us."

Isn’t the split on the Dem side and not the Republican Side?

I have only heard a single Republican in favor, and that is the Progressive Rino Bloomberg.

There were military targets attacked, as well as civilian. This was an act of WAR, not a criminal act. Obie himself said so...when he was Senator Obama in 2006. He himself said they should be tried in a military court. Once again he has genuflected to everyone, and refuses to stand up for (what is supposed to be) his country. I am, once again, sickened.

Bloomberg actually isn’t a Republican anymore, IIRC. He’s an Independent now. He only became a Republican because at the time he ran, NYers still remembered how the Dems had botched NYC so badly before Giuliani and no Dem had any chance of winning.

Personally, I think letting Dems into the GOP without any evidence that they have really had a change of heart and mind is foolish and never works out well for the GOP.

Obama's not going to be happy until there's a muzzein on every block and that hideous Islamic caterwauling echoing down Broadway.

I do not understand this at all. To take the trial from a more or less neutral place to the actual place the crime/terrorism occurred????? Will not the defense demand a change of venue as all the people around will be very familiar with the case, prejudiced. Most of the people will know people directly hurt in the event.

What can you do to keep them out? Heck, if you wanted to, you could run as a RAT.

How the heck can the Feds guarantee protection for the jurors and the jurors' families?

And if the Feds do manage, won't the terrorists then argue that the security required to protect the jurors and their families will prejudice the jurors?

This will be a man-caused disaster of Barry's own making....

But Eric Holder has assured us that they will get the death penalty. Then again, I would not trust Eric Holder with my used cigarette butt after I stumped it out.

Meanwhile the hundreds of millions of dollars in carefully designed trial rooms etc., at Gitmo will sit idly in another year.

Bloomberg isn’t a Republican. He quit a couple of years ago, and now is an Independent.

Yes, if the situation was reversed, we’d be hearing about how the republicans were split on the issue.

How can he assure us they will get the death penalty? Has he rigged the trial?

Please everyone stop calling Bloomberg a Republican.

Bloomberg is the Bloomberg party unto himself.

He is no more a Republican than Scuzzie-wuzzie from New York.

I think they actually have to get some kind of approval, or at least to be a candidate. Bloomberg probably got it because he had huge amounts of his private money available for the campaign.

We had that happen here - the guy “changed” parties and ran as a GOPer because he had no chance of getting elected as a Dem. Of course, once elected, he voted with the Dems and espoused Dem positions. He finally got nabbed in a corruption investigation.

Afterwards, the local GOP boss said he felt really “hurt and betrayed,” because he knew the man socially and trusted him. Moral of the story: never trust a Dem.

Not in Iowa. If you want to run for a state office, you simply go to the Sec. of State's office and get a form.

I suppose if you want to run for a county office, you go to the court house.

Anyone can run.
