N. Korea's Shore-to-ship Missile System Activated For an Hour

Some ships in Baekryung and Yonpyung Island evacuated.

Two Squadrons of high speed patrol boats readied for rapid response

(Seoul = Yonhap News) Kim Kwi-keun = (S. Korean) Military went on alert after detecting that N. Koreans turned on the fire-control radar for shore-to-ship missiles deployed along N. Korean area(shore) north of Yonpyung Island in the West Sea, according to the military authorities on Nov. 15

The military sources said, "Approximately at 1 PM today, we detected that the fire-control radar for N. Korea's multiple shore-to-ship missile bases north of Yonpyung Island was turned on. In response, patrol boats deployed around Baekryung and Yonpyung Island were evacuated to the safer area."

The radar was turned on for an hour and then turned off. No indication of another activation of the radar so far.

Along N. Korean shore north of Yonpyung, N. Koreans deployed numerous shore-to-ship missiles such as Styx missile with the range of 46 km and Silkworm with the range of 83~95 km.

Furthermore, they also deployed many shore artilleries such as 130mm guns with 27km range, 76.2mm guns with 12km range, and 152mm horizontal(?) howitzer with 17km range.

The sources said, "At one point, two squadrons of high speed boats were readied for rapid response. Although today's situation appears to be over, we believe that N. Korean military put on alert shore-to-ship missile bases and shore artillery units, and started training excercise. We will be paying close attention."

A source at JCS said, "we detected unusual signs from N. Korean military in the West Sea area, prompting our ships on forward watch to move back to the South. We don't see any sign of troubles in other areas."

Prior to this development, the N. Korean representative for inter-Korean military talks sent a message to its S. Korean counterpart, in which they declared, "There is only one maritime boundary in the West Sea, ours. From this moment on, there will be nothing but our ruthless military actions to make it stick."

Obama has the answer. He just requires two years to really look at all the options. Meanwhile, Peggy Noonan will be moaning “Thank you, Mr. President!”

It was only on for an hour because that was all the electricity North Korea could generate to power it up.

Just the same procedure as always. Check out this article by Andrei Lankov:

In the first stage, the North Koreans raise tensions, creating the impression they were going to do something really dangerous. They launch missiles, test nuclear devices and engage in ultra-bellicose rhetoric. Once tensions are sufficiently high, and neighboring countries feel uneasy enough, leaders in Pyongyang move to the next stage: they make a few goodwill gestures and hint at the possibility of a negotiated settlement. The world signs with relief and agrees to negotiations.

In the process of negotiations, Pyongyang extracts aid which comes, essentially, as a reward for North Korea's willingness to restore the status quo which existed before the crisis they themselves manufactured.
