How low will he go? Obama gives Japan's Emperor Akihito a wow bow

How low will the new American president go for the world's royalty?

This photo will get Democrat President Obama a lot of approving nods in Japan this weekend, especially among the older generation of Japanese who still pay attention to the royal family living in its downtown castle. Very low bows like this are a sign of great respect and deference for a superior.

To some in the United States, however, an upright handshake might have looked better. Remember Michelle Obama casually patting Britain's Queen Elizabeth on the back during their Buckingham Palace visit? America's royalty tends to make movies and get bad reviews and lots of money as a sign of respect.

Well he is ignorant, incompetent, inexperienced, narcissistic, and arrogant. His bowing to foreign leaders displaying weakness, submissiveness, and appeasement is a very dangerous sign. The bigger picture is, under this administration, the once sovereign U.S. will bow before these international rulers.

I can already hear our beloved troops saying fubo.

Akhito actually looks thoroughly bemused at our protocol challenged Prez. What a disgrace.

Yeah, I hope my WWII vet father-in-law does not see this... he will have a heart attack. After spending the war in the Pacific, he still hasn’t forgiven me for buying a ‘Jap’ car.

Well said; totally agree. This fake temporary prez we have loves to bow. Good for him. But it’s not proper; it’s not right. He continues to make America look subservient wherever he goes in the globe. I cringe whenever that guy travels and meets ANY head of state.....

I do. In the Japanese culture how each person bows when meeting is important. Men of equal rank exchange equal bows. In this case, one is an actual head of State while the other is the figure head of State, but close enough that they are kind of equals.

But the bow that Obama gives is, again, a subservient bow. It lowers the U.S. to being beneath Japan.

It is a very big diplomatic problem.

I agree completely. I was born and raised in Japan and that was my first thought on seeing this picture.

They gonna say he was just trying to pick up something on the floor like they did when he bowed to the King of Saudi Arabia?

I would like to know if any of the people of Japan noticed this diplomatic MISTAKE by the resident of the US White House and if they are commenting on it in Japan today.

Made myself listen to Zero’s speech to, ?, the Japanese Parliament??....caught it after it had started.

Zero made several stumbles in his speech (will we see those on Overbite or Maddow’s shows as we know they would have highlighted President Bush’s speech flubs?)...

He claimed, basically, that (of course) since HE was born in the Pacific (ha ha) he (and, therefore, the US) had some kind of world region relationship to the people of Japan and the rest of Asia...

One sentence drew applause from his audience, forget what that was.

After the speech ended, the cameras on the audience showed a large contingent of what looked like Americans who were seated behind the Japanese who took up the bulk of the audience at the front. (There were many black Americans - guessing these were Americans - in this group). THEY all stood up, cheered, and applauded the speech - and THEN the Japanese in the front of the audience stood up and applauded.

I just had to wonder where they imported these people from in order to give Zero a planted cheering section - perhaps to avoid the embarrassment of the Japanese in the audience NOT showing such enthusiasm.

Probably reading too much into it....

OH - and I noticed Obama has a mole on his face to the left of his nose. For some reason I have never noticed that before. Not being picky, but he really ought to have that removed....and checked.

No President in US history has bowed to a foreign leader other than Obama. George Washington is spinning in his grave.
