A California man wants divorce outlawed.
John Marcotte has filed for a ballot initiative to protect traditional marriage in the state of California as an extension of the work related to Proposition 8, the voter-approved constitutional amendment that defines marriage as between one man and one woman. In essence, Marcotte's project would legally ban divorce.
"Marriage is an important and sacred institution, and I'm just trying to safeguard it in really the most direct way possible," he states.
He says he needs the help of California's registered voters in acquiring "700,000 valid signatures, which likely translates into 1,000,000 [signatures] total." He further reports that he only has about five months to gather that support for the 2010 California Marriage Protection Act.

My wife and I have been together for 19 years now. I love her more now than I ever have in my life, and that is worth more than all of the laws you can pen in your lifetime. You can legislate marital bonds, but you can’t legislate successful marital bonds. Either you grasp the difference, or you don’t. I’m guessing that you don’t.

You are right. I saw a man spend over 50 years in a terrible, terrible marriage, all because he thought he would go to hell if he divorced. Instead he lived in hell and deprived his children of the pleaseure they would have derived from seeing him with a nice lady. Terrible.
It’s interesting to see how many conservatives would support a government mandate that says how they may live their lives and further, have say over the family unit.
I thought this country was based on individual liberty, responsiblity, and freedom to pursue happiness...
Reminds me of what Obama said about the Constitution: “...the Constitution is a charter of negative liberties, says what the states can’t do to you, says what the federal government can’t do to you, but it doesn’t say what the federal government or the state government must do on your behalf.”
The argument that divorced families are a weight on society and the moral fabric of our country may hold true, however, the government shouldn’t be in the business of deciding what’s best for the common good. What is lost in this country is individual responsibility. The moral breakdown can be pinpointed to many deeper issues than divorce. We are in murky waters (socialized medicine, nationalized banks, private sector take over all come to mind) if we are to agree that a government ban on divorce will somehow create a better society.
We either want a free country or we do not.
There are a lot of so-called conservatives who would be more than content to use the force of government to make their neighbors behave in whatever moral fashion they personally subscribe to. They’re really no different than liberals. Like liberals, what they find most abhorrent is a people free to follow the dictates of their individual consciences.

When it works it’s wonderful, but you still have to work at it and go the extra mile. When it doesn’t work, it’s a nightmare. I hope yours is the good kind.

Maybe some freepers prefer to live in a CONSTITUTIONAL REPUBLIC...
And let’s make everyone go to your church, attendance mandatory. Then they have to buy American cars. Then...well, do I need to say more.

Plenty of govt involvement in private lives already, and you absolutely cannot legislate a revival.

Well I happen to believe in that philosophy.. What a stupid concept Separation of Church and state..
I think that would be awful. The only way this could work is if people get married voluntarily. In such a world I would probably not get married “legally” but only religiously.
Personally I would like to see government out of marriage all together. Even the concept of a marriage “license” offends me.

So, why do you need a marriage license to get married - a religious observation?
In all honesty, with that post I was trying to demonstrate with the absurdity of our current system with the absurd.
I learned, through personal experience at the end of the nineties, that a normal adult male, in the US, can marry a woman, sire kids with her, be a good and faithful husband, and suddenly find his wife has changed and is not “happy” and uses the government to remove him from his home, his children, and most of his money for the entire prime of his life.
Completely legally and with the endorsement of the state.
And if he should lose his source of income or any other way not pay he can go to prison in a country that claims to not have a debtor’s prison.
He is essentially made a slave to the state and his ex is what empowers the state.
I’m out of that mess and have been for many years. My ordeal didn’t start until my youngest was 10. I even got custody of my youngest after a few years. But I empathise with the young guys this happens to who have single digit aged kids.
It is a monstrosity that such a thing can be acceptable in a “civilized” culture. People change - especially women. In our current culture, only a fool would marry a young woman. I am absolutely dead serious here.
And I have four daughters - two of which are in one of my bands.
Family court taught me to hate the US governmental system. It has only gotten worse.

If we abolished welfare it would be none of anybody’s business except theirs.
And if we have nationalized health care, your body and how you treat it will become everybody’s business. It really has been an interesting slippery slope, hasn’t it? :)
I would be happy with the reversal of no-fault divorce, making divorce as difficult to get as before Reagan signed it into law. Of course, we're just dreaming, and the perversionphile that is proposing this current law is just spewing sour grapes.

Do you think it is a good idea if people stay together if someone is getting beat up?
And let's also remember that getting beat up isn't just a physical thing. How about the spouse who endured years of smug contempt, quiet mental cruelty, and absolute neglect? Psychological or spiritual battery is worse for being undetectable to the naked eye. Nobody deserves to be imprisoned in that kind of marriage.
And I notice enough people around here smiling at the thought of taxing those who seek divorce. I thought conservatives didn't believe in using the tax codes on behalf of social engineering.
