The diaries of a British reporter who risked his reputation to expose the horrors of Stalin's murderous famine in Ukraine are going on display in England.
Welsh journalist Gareth Jones entered Ukraine in March 1933, at the height of an artificial famine engineered by Soviet dictator Josef Stalin as part of his campaign to force peasants into collective farms.
Millions starved to death between 1932 and 1933 as the Soviet secret police emptied the countryside of grain and livestock.
Jones' reporting was one of the first attempts to bring the disaster to the world's attention.
"Famine Grips Russia - Millions Dying" read the front page of the New York Evening Post on March 29, 1933.
"Famine on a colossal scale, impending death of millions from hunger, murderous terror ... this is the summary of Mr Jones's firsthand observations," the paper said.
As starvation and cannibalism spread across Ukraine, Soviet authorities exported more than a million tonnes of grain to the West, using the money to build factories and arm its military.
Historians say that between four million and five million Ukrainians perished in what is sometimes referred to as the Great Famine.
Walking from village to village, Jones recorded desperate Ukrainians scrambling for food, scribbling brief interviews in pencil on lined notebooks.
"They all had the same story: 'There is no bread - we haven't had bread for two months - a lot are dying,"' Jones wrote in one entry.
"We are the living dead," he quoted one peasant as saying.
Jones' eyewitness account had little effect on world opinion at the time.
Stalin's totalitarian regime tightly controlled the flow of information out of the USSR, and many Moscow-based foreign correspondents - some of whom had pro-Soviet sympathies - refused to believe Jones' reporting.

Substitute guns for gold that is what obama’s disciples have planned for here. Whether they get to execute their plan is another matter, but, rest assured, that is the most pleasant [for us]thing that they have planned for us.
It appears to me that, just as the Jews in Germany in the 20s amd 30s refused to, despite many warnings, believe what the National Socialists had in store for them, the ,ajority of Conservatives,Christians, etal refuse to acknowledge the extent that the socialists, a/k/a Democrts hate them.
You’re right. The book is in storage, or I could have provided more info. (My bad!)
With you, I wish there had been more first-hand accounts, but that’s where “The Gulag Archipelego” comes in. For what it’s worth, it’s a first hand account of the entire system.
I will look for “Kolyma By Conquest” on Amazon and B&N. I’m sure it will, most likely, whet my appetite for more Eurasian history. Thanks for letting me know about that.
:o]
I just bought “The 900 Days” by Harrison Salisbury, and another copy (the first one wore out long ago) of “One Day In the Life of Ivan Denosivich.”
bump
Still waiting for “The Inner Circle” to finally come out on DVD.
I’m still waiting for the Communists in Hollywood, etc. to produce even one movie, tv special, documentary (?) about ALL the other horrors and genocides that went on between Leninist and Stalinist times, including this one.
Most people don’t have a clue what else was going on then, since the Communists didn’t keep meticulous records, or, as the victors of WWII, purged them.
My grandparents left Huck, Russia in 1911 for the United States. Below is an article from the American Historical Society of Germans From Russia.

“HAUNTING IMAGES OF GENOCIDE” Excerpts from an article which appeared in the Lincoln Journal/Star (11/4/96).
A memorial service was held on November 7, 1996 at 7:00 P.M. in the east chambers of the Nebraska State Capital Building to remember the genocide of more than one million German Russians who were forced to be deported by train to work and extermination camps. Mass starvation existed as well as systematic shootings of hundreds of German Russian people during this time. All of this happened in Russia, not Nazi Germany.
Samuel Sinner, a Lincoln chapter member, is researching the government sponsored genocide of German Russians that occurred between 1915-1955.
“The effects of the genocide were so far reaching that Sinner said he thinks every German Russian who fled to Lincoln and other United States Cities had at least one relative killed.”
The date of the memorial is significant because Lenin and the Bolsheviks seized control of the Russian government on this date in 1917.’ Research shows that Lenin and Stalin ordered the executions of many German Russians.
According to Sinner, thousands died of starvation while others died from bullets to the head or ropes around their necks in order to escape execution quotas ordered by Lenin.
The starvation ended in 1924 when Lenin died, but there wasn’t much time to recover before Stalin took over and instituted his first Five Year Plan which called for the elimination of all German Russian privately owned farms.
cont.
“Although they weren’t the only ethnic group that suffered under Lenin and Stalin, German Russians were hit hard because they had the best and largest farms,” Sinner Said.
“Sometimes it haunts you in the night,” said Samuel Sinner. “Even the children were executed: The way they died-they deserve to have their story told,” he added.

The Holocaust that transpired in the Soviet Union under Stalin is essentially denied to this day by the Progressive Left, including many in the counsel of our President. The practice of human sacrifice is still not beyond the pale for some among us, namely those whose God is not God, but the State, and who value an enforced equality of outcome above human liberty.
Stalin carried on where Lenin left off, both deserve to rot in hell.

An award winning documentary about Stalins terror famine in the Ukraine. Banned from PBS for years even though it had won numerous film awards.
Finally when conservative Congressmen made a threat to cut off funding for PBS, it was aired on a special edition of Buckleys “Firing Line”, attempting to taint it as partisan and not a historical documentary.
There was no advertising of it on PBS prior to the showing either.
PBS, at the time, had almost daily documentarys that were pro communist on Frontline, yet they resisted mightedly putting this documentary about communist mass murder on.
Since then I never, ever donate to the local PBS channel.
