Many Dems will tend to vote for the most leftist Republican candidate, rather than the Democrat candidate - since their incumbent (Boxer) will be running unopposed in her primary.
Its really a very fouled up system.
Now in June, there will be a ballot initiative that would establish a new open primary system. This was put on by RINO Abel Moldanado, which was the payoff from the legistation for him voting on the last bloated budget. If passed, it would affect elections post-June 2010.

agreed on open primaries mucking things up... and Yes, it is fouled up.
between gerrymandering and powerful lobbies that could care less about the constituents, you’d think it was a lose lose again..
but, being as many of the leftist base will be toking medicinal marijuana and partying hardy, I doubt many of them will be able to find the polling booths much less their mailboxes to send in the absentee ballots. ;-)
It is a mess and getting messier.
It’s be a shame to waste the opportunity on a knock-off candidate... especially if it was a McCain or Romney one.
