With a historic endorsement from the Mormon church, the Salt Lake City Council unanimously passed a pair of ordinances making it illegal to discriminate against gays in housing and employment.
Tuesday's action was the first time the Utah-based church which has been steadfast in its opposition to gay marriage has publicly supported gay rights legislation.
"The church supports these ordinances because they are fair and reasonable and do not do violence to the institution of marriage," Michael Otterson, the director of public affairs for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints said.
The vote makes Salt Lake City the first Utah community to ban discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. The measures make it illegal to fire someone from their job or evict someone from their residence because they are lesbian, bisexual, gay or transgender.
"What happened here tonight I do believe is a historic event," Brandie Balken, director of Equality Utah, which works on gay rights legislation.
But Otterson said the endorsement was not a shift in the church's position on gay rights, and he stressed it "remains unequivocally committed to defending the bedrock foundation of marriage between a man and a woman."

Mutt Romney must sit on the board?
The Morman church use to be flat out pro-family values all the way...
..whether one disagreed with their doctrine, you could count on them to take a moral stand against junk like this.
Sodomites corrupt everything they touch.
Many Americans Heroes are named Gay.
I find this very strange.
Thats families forever...
an utterly contradictory doctrine to Christianity
Maybe this is a consequence of the recently passed extension to the Hate Crime Law. Elections have consequences. The Mormon church may not be able to stand up againd the new Federal Law.
Trent Lott was right when he said the Cilil Rights legislation put in law during the 60’s was very poorly written. What the American people thought was to help Blacks has now morphed into special class rights for Gays, women, Hispanics, handicapped, fat people, etc., etc
I guess this will be coming in part II of the Book of Mormon that will be coming to a bookstore near you.
Looks like the Mormon Church is trying to be “all inclusive” but this will be the destruction of the Mormon Church.
If you want to really truly know what the Mormon church believes, go to this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NwS4X94FpF4
1) The government should have ABSOLUTELY no say in who a company hires or who a landlord rents to.
2) I agree with the church and the One woman, one man concept of marriage. But that is my choice and I will not judge others if they disagree with me.
3) As an employer, I have hired many qualified lesbian and homosexual men over less qualified straits and vice versa.
This is my choice because it is my company.
4) I could care less about the sexual orientation of my neighbors just as long as they are QUIET and RESPECTFUL.
5) There is only ONE JUDGE-—GOD.
Bingo! We have a winner. You people have no idea what the DoJ has in store for religious conservatives in the coming years using Matthew Shepard as a jackhammer.
I live in Salt Lake City and many of my Mormon friends are very offended by this cave in to Political Correctness. The LDS may be losing members.
This is what happens when you allow liberalism to infiltrate religion.
..what I was addressing was the solid values they adhered to.
Does Mitt have any influence on this one since 2012 is coming around the corner?
The Mormons change their doctrine and position with the culture. They did it in 1978 with blacks and now are changing it on homosexuals. They will likely support gay marriage soon.

Yep. The 1978 “revelation on the priesthood” (allowing it for blacks who up until then carried the “mark of Cain) came about because of public pressure. They also did it with polygamy with their 1890 “revelation” stopping the practice.
For the last 15 years or so, they have been getting pressure from the GLBT who have left/been excommunicated, and more public pressure after the Prop 8 support. I fully expect within the next 10 years or so they will have a “revelation” changing their stance on homosexuality.
No, you fail to see what is at the core of Mormonism. The family is not something to be degenerated for political correctness. Mormons will not do as you surmise. Count on it.
Are we sure this isn’t a hoax, like the US Chamber of Commerce backing cap & trade?
Seriously, though: Reason #3,746 that Mormonism is a cult. There’s a reason Paul described homosexual behavior as something that is only accepted or endorsed by those who have become terribly spiritually degraded.
