Because Republican doesn’t always mean Conservative.

Actually, in most cases, it doesn’t anymore.

Here in upstate New York, “Republican” is another word for “moderate Democrat”. There are some real Republicans left, but they prefer to be called “Conservative”, “Independent” or “Libertarian”.
