Koala numbers dropping significantly, warns Australian Koala Foundation
The Daily Telegraph ^ | November 10, 2009 | Malcolm Holland

THE Federal Government must stop counting trees and start counting koalas as the animals suffer dramatic declines, it was claimed yesterday.

Scientists will meet today in Canberra to debate whether koalas should be made a threatened species under federal laws.

The Australian Koala Foundation yesterday released figures which it claimed showed falls in koala numbers across NSW and Australia were so dramatic it was vital they were granted federal government protection.

And the conservation group said it feared Federal Environment Minister Peter Garrett would refuse to list koalas as endangered because there was supposedly enough bush for them.

Ohhh, I love koalas so much, I do not want them to go extinct. Take a look at my page and you'll see that the koala is my favorite Australian animal.

Perhaps the koalas aren’t mating because there are so many conservationists and government officials stomping around in their habitat counting them.

Aren’t koala’s too much of an icon to get too far down the road to extinction? I doubt they would let that happen. But you never know.

They are such a cool animal. They are the only animal I know, when once you see one, you can take your time getting the tripod set up, adjusting the focal length on the camera for the most perfect shot, and they have barely moved!

They're fur is unexpectedly rough. Its not soft like rabbit fur (as I was expecting), but more like steel wool. Very sweet creatures.

A kangaroo and emu are on the coat of arms of Australia. Marino sheep in on the $2.00 bill. I think a koala is on one of the coins (obverse).

Efforts are underway to assist the koala.

The Mercy Hospital for Animals in Australia specializes in treating sick koala bears. Although koalas don’t generally drink water, they have found that a strong tea of eucalyptus leaves boosts their immune system, and promotes healing. It’s a rather lumpy beverage, but, of course, the koala tea of Mercy is not strained.

Might just be me. When I think of Australia I think of koalas. Kangaroos are just overgrown jackrabbits, IMO.

I thought they were already on the endangered list. They used to be hunted for their fur.

I think of Kookaburras. They have such a LOUD, funny sound. In the gum tree in the back yard, we had a nest of them. You didn’t need an alarm clock with Kookaburras near your window!

One could say that Koalas have ‘evolved’ a unique survival system: They are so cute that humans want to help them survive.

The two dollar bill is long defunct - replaced by a coin in 1988 (the dollar was replaced in 1984). And, in fact, all the notes have changed since then - plastic notes quite different to the old paper ones.

Surprisingly, perhaps, the Koala isn't on any of the standard coins, although it does appear on commemoratives from time to time.
