In a story about why the U.S. Catholic Bishops have embraced Democratic-style universal health care, the Los Angeles Times noted that the Roman Catholic Church considers healthcare a basic human right, "a position the church has articulated since 1963, when it was included in a papal encyclical by Pope John XXIII." Indeed, healthcare is declared a right in the "Peace on Earth" encyclical. That is also the basis of Obamacare.

As a former Catholic who suffered through eight years of being graded on religion (and was hit on the head by a priest with a bible for my efforts), I think I can safely say the Catholic church is socialist in all things, except when it comes to dividing up the loot it personally controls.

I just love freedom of speech.
It lets us know who all the jackasses are.

I'm waiting, again, for certain apologists to tell me that socialism is not coming from the pulpit in some diocese.
The Catholic Church has used abortion as the single divisive issue on the nationalization/socializaiton of health care. After that, they seem to be perfectly fine with the concept, even to the extent that they're driving the issue.

Rights, in a political sense, are freedoms “from” something not freedoms “of” something. The Church is overstepping its “Render unto Caesar” boundaries.

You said it! The Catholic church is loaded with socialists, particularly the schools. They are almost all “social justice” commies.

Yep, their other crown issue is amnesty for all.

Although there are American bishops who unwisely may support the health care bill (with the Stupack amendment), they do NOT adequately reflect the real social teaching of the Church. There is much misinformation out there....

Many priests hold advanced degrees in psychology, sociology, etc. I doubt there are many with degrees in economics.

Nothing new here....
In the early 90's a Ballot petition in the State of Mass was proposition 6, which would have radically changed the spending habits of the State House and may have sent the State down an almost Libertarian Road.
The priest in the Springfield MA diocese from the pulpit told the parishioners to vote against Prop 6.
So much for seperation of church and state and their 501(c)(3) Status.
As you can imagine it wnet down to a drubbing defeat.
And they wonder why so many Catholics have lapst and gone the Evangelical Route via all the various churches and subsets within.

At the same time the Pro-Life movement doesn't want Roe-V-Wade overturned, ditto the Church. It is something to rail against and develop income streams via the self perpetuating nature of a 501(c)(3) corporations they are, ditto the constant pushing via the Sierra Club, the environment is never clean enough. If you think I am cynical or anti chruch fire away, I am up for a good argument.

Many priests hold advanced degrees in psychology, sociology, etc. There's the problem. Those disciplines are entirely anti-faith. Psychology teaches that people are just animals. Sending priests to learn psychology is foolish. They are supposed to minister to spiritual needs not become flacks for the pharmaceutical industry.

Freedom of the press and the right to bear arms are also universal rights, but it does not follow from that that the state should supply me with a printing press (or even a free URL) or a rifle by taxing my fellow citizens.
Next time some leftist tells you that “health care is a right”, ask why it supposedly needs subventions from the taxpayers and a government bureaucracy to be exercised when other rights like those enumerated in the Constitution have to be exercised at our own expense?
