you are kind of the eyes and ears for the freeper community in that part of the world - what’s your gut telling you on this. Is Kim going to let it go at this? Was this merely a ploy for a little attention before Obama’s trip?

what do you suppose South Korea is going to have to give up?
-Or will a simple apology by the Nobel Peace prize winner to the Norks do the trick?

They will wait and watch our responses:S. Koreans, Americans, Chinese, and Japan. If they are all firmly closing rank, N. Korea will back off. However, if there is an opening(Chinese subtle wink and nod, Obama wavering, etc,) they will exploit it and escalate their provocation. I think they have a list of actions in the queue, ready to go, if needed.

This may be part of their "going our own way" scenario if U.S. does not embrace NK version of bilateral talks. How far it will play out is pretty much up to our collective response.

And here is a portion of the 1953 Armistice Agreement between the UN Forces on one side, and the Norks and ChiComs on the otherr side: "...TAECHONG-DO (37°50'N, 124°42'E) , SOCHONG-DO (37°46'N, 124°46'E) , YONPYONG-DO (37°38'N, 125°40'E) , and U-DO (37°36'N, 125°58'E) , which shall remain under the military control of the Commander-in-Chief, United Nations Command. All the islands on the west coast of Korea lying south of the above-mentioned boundary line shall remain under the military control of the Commander-in-Chief, United Nations Command..."

Wow..now I saw what you’re talking about. I didn’t see any of that.

I support RP, but that still bugs the heck out of me...

The North Korean boat used 40mm cannon. I imagine the SK vessel used much the same.

Really doubt it was 40mm cannon. SK’s patrol boats don’t mount armor capable of defeating 40mm. There would have been more damage and casualties on the SK boat if the NK’s had had 40mm.

What’s more likely is that the NK boat mounted 14.7mm Soviet-design heavy machine guns - which won’t penetrate the armor of the SK boats.

The SK boat mounted (and according to the article, used) its 40mm cannon.

Officially it is a rumor. Unofficially, who knows?
It could turn out to be a rumor or stand-off really happened but they hushed it up. Folks in gov fear unwanted market jitters, which can spook economy. So they can feel the temptation to sweep it under the carpet if it was just the stand-off between several ships from each side, staring at each other.

That makes sense that SK would hush it up, if it caused a big market tumble... you suspect NK is going to continue this provocation, don’t you?

Well, there may be a pause if the outside appear to stay resolute. It is a probing operation to test the water. He will try it again. After all, Chia Head was not able to bend SK and U.S. to his wishes so far.

Dont think the soviets made a 40mm cannon. Could be a 30mm, or a quad 14.5, or even 23mm. None of them are staggeringly good for sure.

They did make a 37mm which is roughly in the same class, though. Next one up from there is the 57mm S-60.
