Members of Fredericton's Royal Canadian Legion are asking vandals who destroyed part of the city's cenotaph to turn themselves in as the organization prepares for Remembrance Day.

Jean-Guy Perrault, the president of Branch 4 of the Royal Canadian Legion, arrived at the cenotaph on Monday morning to decide where to place the crosses for Wednesday's Remembrance Day ceremony. That's when he noticed that the cenotaph had been heavily damaged in places.

I hope the vandals are found by vets before the cops get them, and pound the living pi$$ out of them.

I stood in front of that cenotaph many times, in the presence of 2000 men in kilts of the Black Watch Regiment.

Frederiction is connected with the military, and in WWII was closely connected to the Battle of Britain through Max Aitken, Lord Beaverbrook, Minster of Air Production in Britain. Many WWII veterans flew in the RAF during the war because of it.

CFB Gagetown is only 15 miles away.

This is a travesty. Blood boiling here, like that of many New Brunswickers. We lost many fine young men and women in that war. They deserve respect. And now they deserve justice.

Canadian Army brat here. CFB Gagetown is where I grew up and the locals are going to be extremely upset by this. There is a true reverence for the military in this area, which has increased exponentially since the local base has lost a significant number of soldiers in combat in Afghanistan. Ten years ago the turnout at these ceremonies was fading as quickly as the number of surviving WWII vets, but the ceremonies (in both Fredericton and on the base) have had a significant increase in turnout since our men and women have been in harm’s way. You’ll find few people here who will consider the perpetrators to be anything other than scum.

I heard a phrase said many times when I was a boy .

Anytime a boy stepped out of line or misbehaved the line was , “That boy needs to spend some time in the army”. Usually spoke by one of those old guys , like my Dad, my Uncles, the fathers of my friends , who happened to be the veterans of places like Dieppe, Ortona, the Scheldt , the North Atlantic . Those old guys , then all of 35 or 38 years old , and here we are 45-50 years later and those old guys still had the right answer.

I know if those old guys were still here today , those stupid , ignorant jerks would BE in the army.

Or have bruised arses.

I hope this was a party punk stunt. If it was a political statement, they need 5 to 10 in the pen.

It will cost 50 grand to fix this unique work of art.
