Settlement Opens Door For Hundreds Of Legal Immigrants To Become U.S. Citizens

November 9, 2009

Hundreds of legal immigrants in Southern California who have been waiting years for citizenship will have their cases resolved as a result of a settlement with the federal government, attorneys announced today.

The immigrants were stuck in lengthy delays as they waited for the FBI to complete their security name checks and for U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services to approve their citizenship applications.

The settlement, approved Friday in U.S. District Court in Santa Ana, sets a six-month deadline for the government to decide on hundreds of citizenship applications from Los Angeles, Santa Ana and San Bernardino.

The settlement also ends indefinite delays in processing naturalization applications, according to the plaintiffs.

“The naturalization process has been a bureaucratic nightmare for so many permanent residents who did everything right to become citizens of this country,” Jennie Pasquarella, staff attorney with the ACLU of Southern California, said today in a statement. “This restores the dream of citizenship and ensures that the government will be held accountable.”

The plaintiffs, including the American Civil Liberties Union and the National Immigration Law Center, filed the suit in 2007 and argued that legal permanent residents lost jobs, were prevented from voting and missed out on in-state tuition breaks because of the delays.

Sonali Kolhatkar, one of the plaintiffs, came to the U.S. on a student visa in 1999 and got married soon after. The United Arab Emirates-born journalist filed for citizenship in 2005, but then years passed without any word on her case, despite her persistent efforts to find out what was causing the delay.

Too disgusted by the multiple sneak attacks on this country to have anything left to say.

Oh good, more Democrats, needy Democrats, people who like and need big government, people who want us to pay for their healthcare and everything else, but they are good people who do the jobs for the rest of us who can’t find jobs. Don’t sweat it though, maybe 10 percent of them will vote for liberal Republicans. At least it isn’t a monolithic problem, politically speaking.

Send them all back to their countries of origin and tell them “Sorry, we’re all full up. No vacancies.”

How appropriate!!! We are still investigating a citizen muslim terrorist attack on one of our army bases - so let's just make a few hundred more citizens.

Maybe they can spread around & see what else can be attacked by a citizen muslim.

I’m all for a time limit to get the feds off their butts ,, my sister-in-law is in the USA and has been waiting 8 years ,, legal all the way from day#1 ... she is from a friendly country , has a mba and no negative info will ever be found on her because there is none ... The delays are beyond infuriating and just make people come to the conclusion that it’s better to be illegal where you have no responsibilities, no taxes just use someone elses SS ,, you are let go when stopped in traffic because you’re too much trouble ,, no car insurance .. no medical bills ... you can still get credit cards , cars and houses and all with unverifiable info... what a life you have when you’re illegal!

I agree! One of the biggest incentives for illegal immigration is that legal immigration is a hopeless morass of bureaucratic delay and incompetence.

And now we are turning over our entire health care system to the same people. What could go wrong?

I foresee an increase in “illegal healthcare” services. Not being allowed the legal government healthcare might cause you to seek illegal alternatives.

These are the LEGAL folks, who did it the right way. As far as I’m concerned, they are welcome here.

Not in such large numbers. See Pat Buchanan’s book: “Death of The West” where he forcefully makes the case how a large influx of immigrants, legal included, can dramatically change the cultural and Judeo-Christian heritage of the nation. As T.S. Eliot put it, you change the culture and you have a different nation. The large and growing Hindu and Moslem population with phonomenal birth rates has already created a deleterious political and sociological landscape manfiesting un-accommodatable differences in ritual, attire, habits, and ghetto-type residential enclaves.
