So the CIA knew but didn’t brief the Army? Unbelievable. Well they can’t blame it on Bush’s CIA, not with Leon Panetta running the show, it’s now Obama’s CIA.

This makes Hasan’s involvement in that Obama transition thing even more interesting. And raises another question: If Hasan was an Islamist terrorist-in-waiting, was the Fort Hood shooting his goal all along, or had he been doing something else and chose to end with this atrocity for another reason?

This is growing more curious by the minute, and plenty of heads ought to roll over this one.

Let’s see...if the ABC report is correct, then the CIA was aware of Hasan’s efforts to contact Al Qaida representatives. And, assuming there isn’t a local chapter in the Killeen/Fort Hood area, then that means the attempted contact occurred prior to Hasan’s transfer to Texas, or he was trying to reach Al Qaida through Islamist websites, forums, etc. If that’s the case, then it’s a sure bet that the NSA and its various allied partners were involved—and may have provided the initial tip to the CIA.

From there, it’s easy to see how the FBI got involved. Hasan was an Army officer, stationed in the CONUS, so any surveillance would have to be conducted by the bureau. At that point, the FBI would (presumably) contact the Army’s Criminal Investigation Command (CIC), which should have notified Hasan’ superiors.

It will be fascinating to see how many of these “i’s” were dotted, and the extent of the notification process. From my experience (20 + years in the USAF), being under investigation by a federal law enforcement agency is sufficient to pull your clearance, and remove the individual from sensitive duties, including seeing psychiatric patients in a military hospital.

There were multiple, ghastly failures in the run-up to last week’s massacre at Fort Hood, and demands for accountability ought to start at the top of the food chain. If the CIA and FBI were watching this guy, then several flag-rank Army officers knew what was going on, but did nothing to protect their soldiers and the wider military community.

Unfortunately, the fair-haired boys and girls will be protected from scrutiny and disciplinary action. I predict a couple of O-6s will receive administrative punishment, and that will be about it, save a scathing report from the Army IG on the failures that contributed to last week’s massacre at Fort Hood.

++++++++++++++++

They’ll still try to blame it on Bush. That’s how mendacious they are.

It wouldn't surprise me to learn that the CIA had knowledge of this, but didn't act on it. This Administration has already demonstrated its overt hostility to the CIA as it seeks to prosecute agents for doing what they were asked to do. Their lack of further cooperation with this Administration would be understandable.

Liberals applauded a rogue CIA when it came to Valerie Plame's buddies trying to bring down the Bush Administration. Once again, the chickens have come home to roost.
