Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan is awake and talking, a Brooke Army Medical Center spokesman said Sunday.
Dewey Mitchell, public affairs chief at the hospital, said he did not know if the accused gunman in Thursday mass shooting at Fort Hood is talking to investigators.
“I am not sure how much he is talking,” Dewey Mitchell said. “There is some communication going on. I just got that indication from people on our nursing staff.”
Hasan, wounded four times in a shootout with post police, is in critical but stable condition, Mitchell said.

I've been doing a little math and looking at some other cases, there's a very realistic chance that Obama won't have anything to do with this case, at all. Because of the number of victims and resulting charges, it will probably be close to 7 years (or longer) before the military is done adjudicating this case. Only then, will the President (whomever that is at the time) be asked to approve a death sentence.
Before that time, neither the President, the SecDef nor the Army COS will say much about the case, and certainly nothing about the alleged perpetrator - publicly or privately. They'll want to do everything they can to avoid the appearance of unlawful command influence, which would sink the case on appeal.
According to the site I posted, lethal injection is currently the only method used by the military. Unfortunately, it takes personal approval by the president to execute someone in the military. Does he dare give the approval to execute a Muslim?
Yeah, it is 72 + 28. Muslims always argue that nowhere in the Koran is it specified that there will be 72 virgins. This claim is true because the number 72 is from the Hadiths and not Koran. However, the 28 boys is from Koran. I just googled for "72 virgins and 28 boys" and immediately found a number of sites. He strapped on two sidearms and more than a hundred rounds. A 2nd Lieutenant with the ink still wet on his commission would be able to demonstrate premeditation. I'm sure Hasan will assert an affirmative defense and hope for lifetime institutionalization. Insanity is tough to prove in the civilian world, and even harder in the military world.
As a practical matter, Hasan has no chance of beating the wrap, he's just got to hope that the Army will compromise their investigation in some way, or that the prosecution will make a mistake at trial that can spare him the needle.
