KILLEEN, Texas One of two police officers who confronted the alleged Fort Hood killer says he shot Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan before kicking the man's weapon away, handcuffing him and ending the nation's worst killing spree on a military base.
Sgt. Mark Todd joined Sgt. Kimberly Munley, hailed as a hero for her actions, in a firefight with Hasan that lasted less than a minute. Todd, 42, was not wounded, but the exchange left Munley injured and Hasan critically wounded.
Seconds after Todd arrived on the scene, he said he saw a calm-looking Hasan, his gun drawn and his fingers pointing at people.
"He was firing at people as they were trying to run and hide," Todd told The Associated Press.
That's when Todd, a retired soldier who now works as a civilian police officer at Ford Hood, said he shouted at Hasan.
"I told him stop and drop your weapons. I identified myself as police and he turned and fired a couple of rounds at me. I didn't hear him say a word ... he just turned and fired."

I’m confused about something. I understand that only certain servicemen are allowed to carry weapons on base. Why is that? Had they all been allowed to carry, he’d have been stopped much quicker. Right to carry is what civilians push for, why not there too?
It’s hard to believe, but our military bases are virtually “Gun Free Zones”, AKA KILLING FIELDS.
“Cop: Shrink shot soldiers running for cover”
The reporter misspelled “Muslim jihadist”.
The only people carrying firearms are the cops, sometimes even they don’t have ammo.
It is possible for non-cops to have a firearm but only if they are going to or from the armory. Anywhere else and they go to jail if caught.
If the military police learn of someone with a gun stored in their barracks they will call out the SWAT team.
Amazing. I’d love to know the history...(reasoning/logic/and how a decision to this end ever came about), if anyone knows.
Only MPs and civilian police carry loaded weapons on most bases. Exceptions are those escorting weapons and ammo to/from firing ranges. Even on most COBs in Iraq, weapons are carried unloaded, but a magazine is carried. I guess they figure those of us trained in firearms aren’t responsible enough to carry them...
It’s ridiculous! If we can’t trust a soldier to carry a loaded gun then that person shouldn’t be a soldier. Soldiers should be allowed to carry and keep loaded weapons to defend themselves against the odd nut and jihadist loon.
"If we can’t trust a soldier to carry a loaded gun then that person shouldn’t be a soldier."
PC is a cancer that must be destroyed.
I am an American and believe in cancel/open carry - PERIOD!!!
Only the weak/brainwashed want to be defenseless.
An armed society is a polite society.
Just look at the ghettos :-)
And the second to last word of the article is "Munley." Should be, "McAninch."
Tuco
Actually, a very good philosophy in a firefight.
I agree completely. The chain-of-command is so worried about negligent discharges (unintentional firings) and such that they’re severly handicapping our military’s (not every one is a Soldier) ability. Trust the people we’ve trained to do their jobs...
*If we cant trust a soldier to carry a loaded gun then that person shouldnt be a soldier. Soldiers should be allowed to carry and keep loaded weapons to defend themselves against the odd nut and jihadist loon.*
I’m with you to a point, but consider all the families on post, visitors, class six stores, cheating spouses, etc. etc. It’s not a PC decision, it’s a risk management decision.
