"Or he could be merely standing up out of politeness and good manners as the ambassador leaves..."

A SOLDIER knows how to follow orders. The people in charge asked that EVERYONE remain seated. It's been reported that Hasan, although American born and raised, would write on forms that he was Palestinian- I too suspect he may have had other plans for the Ambassador at this event, but mulled it over and changed his mind. The fatigues make me wonder too--this was someone who was a major, he could have worn a suit or nice casual clothes to the event. Too many things that make you go 'hmmmmm...'

Now THAT'S thinking. My sentiments exactly and felt it right when I saw the video.
It was clearly announced twice from the podium to all to stay put, and everyone there knew what it meant, i.e. when a VIP and his entourage/security enters or exits a large function. That man got up for a reason, and I don't think it was because the Preparation H was wearing off.
As you wisely noticed, military is supposed to know "stand", "sit", do this and do that.

"The fatigues make me wonder too--this was someone who was a major, he could have worn a suit or nice casual clothes to the event."From what I remember hearing he would not yet have been a major in Jan. 2009. I think he was automatically promoted to major shortly before he was transfered to Ft Hood. That was about 4 months ago.

Ditto, EXACTLY, and bump.
NO WAY would even a Private stand after being told to remain seated.
(Devil’s advocate on: Unless he was not listening and was on auto-pilot and went to stand at attention when a Superior exits a room, until told “At Ease.”)
