State Rep. Chuck Hopson says he's leaving the Democratic Party and becoming a Republican.

Hopson says President Barack Obama and Democrats in Congress don't reflect the conservative values of his East Texas district.

Hopson, in a phone interview from Jacksonville, said Friday that more than 70 percent of voters in his district voted for Republican John McCain in the 2008 presidential election.

The decision is tough blow for the Texas Democratic Party. The split in the Texas House of Representatives was a narrow 76-74 in favor of the GOP.

Well if he was for John McCain, maybe he should consider starting a moderate party.

It takes some guts to be the first one to jump ship. I hope others will be inspired.

With Perry selling off control of our highways to private companies here in Texas, I’ve had to vote Democrat at the state level (only) in our last 3 elections (first and only times in my life). I was one of those persons that was helping the State House get dangerously close to tipping Democrat...but what could I do? My local Republican representative would not respond to me when I asked if he supported this transfer of control...so I worked to defeat him.

Hopefully we’ll get Kay as our Republican nominee (who believes that freeways should remain free) and I can go back to straight-ticket voting again - but we’ll see.

“You really WANT KBH as your next governor?”

No, I’d much rather have Dan Patrick...unfortunately he’s not running (yet), so I’m stuck with Kay.

...and actually I’m starting to think that should Kay run for gov, then Perry will run for her seat (rather than run for re-election)...it just makes sense, since Perry knows he cannot beat her in the Primary.

Just wow! I'm not a Texan, but I've lost all respect for the tramp. Leaving the senate and creating an open seat that needs to be defended and challenging a governor of her own party is about as politically treacherous act as I can imagine. I hope she gets her head handed to her and goes off to live in total disgrace and obscurity for all of her remaining years.

I hear you, but actually her timing is ideal for leaving the seat, since next year will be a Republican rout, and if we cannot hold a seat in Texas in those conditions, then what’s the point of even being a political party. It will would have been much tougher to hold the seat if she had chosen to serve out her term and leave the seat open in 2012 - so I’m fine with what she’s doing.

Sorry! But we've seen this many times since the 90's. How many of these so-called "converts" are really "infiltrators"?

We don't need no more stinking RINO's!

Have pols like him meet with Jack Bauer for an "intense" examination of conservative principles.

Then apply life-saving techniques if he passes....

Jumping ship because they don’t want to be identified with the treasonous commies.

The split in the Texas House of Representatives was a narrow 76-74 in favor of the GOP.

The GOP is at fault here by their refusal to call their opposition what they are; Marxist crooks.

Let’s hope he does not “do a DeDe”! If he has conservative values, fine. But we do not need any “DeDe doers!”

One more vote for GOP redistricting plans in 2011 can’t be all bad. Not sure how many House seats we’ll gain in the next census but 2-3 wouldn’t be unreasonable.

"Jumping ship because they don’t want to be identified with the treasonous commies."

That would require principle. If they had any, would they have run as Dems in the first place? More likely jumping ship because it is sinking. Doubt they'd have been re-elected as Dems next go-round.

So you’d rather have KBH and her liberal views as Gov of Texas, in addition to your past voting that has aided the liberal Dems?

Toll roads are toll roads! They cost you to drive them, whether they are run by a foreign or domestically owned entity. If foreign owned and operated, they have to pay for the upkeep instead of the taxpayers throughout the State.

KBH is a mousey, left of center, pol who has been in the DC arena far too long. She opposes border control and can never be depended on to vote the conservative views on most issues.

It’s somewhat embarrassing that you refer to yourself as a Texan, when you openly admit that you support people like Kay BH.
