Lessons learned from the horrific Virginia Tech shootings in 2007 are credited with averting an even bigger massacre at Fort Hood, Texas, Thursday afternoon when police officer Kimberly Munley confronted the gunman without waiting for backup and took him down with four shots.
Reviews in the aftermath of the shootings at Virginia Tech, where 32 died, found that first responders' decision to be careful and wait for backup probably cost lives as that gunman moved unchecked from classroom to classroom as law enforcement massed outside.
Those findings had found their way to Fort Hood's Special Reaction Team, which had practiced an entirely new protocol for at least a year before Thursday afternoon's rampage here, in which 13 were killed and at least 28 wounded.
"The lesson from Virginia Tech was, don't wait for backup but move to the target and eliminate the shooter," says Chuck Medley, chief of Fort Hood's emergency services. "It requires courage and it requires skill."
The task on Thursday fell to the petite Ms. Munley, a civilian police officer employed by the Army at Fort Hood. Munley had taken part in intensive active-shooter training during the past year.
One of the first responders, she exited her car and entered the building as shots rang out. She rounded a corner, identified the shooter, and fired four times. He returned fire and hit her at least twice in the legs and once in the arm. She underwent surgery Friday but is said to be in good condition. It's unclear how many other responders were present and firing, but Munley's shots are believed to be the ones that stopped the alleged gunman, Army psychiatrist Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan.

I hope she gets a citation, a hug and pay raise. What a woman.
God Bless her and let's all pray for her recovery. Anything can still happen... post op infection, blood clots so let's just thank God for her cool head and offer up a prayer for all the men and women touched by this worthless, sniveling, parasite of a muzzie man.
Did you read the article before posting or just the headline?
I heard on the news that she is also a Mom. God Bless her.
She is awesome. God Bless her. She is a very brave woman and I’m very proud of her and that she took him down I heard on the radio today that the terrorist prayed 5 times a day and would not permit his photo to be taken with a woman in the picture. I hope he KNOWS it was a woman who stopped his attack.
What a shame that Virginia Tech learned nothing from Columbine.
Maybe the TOTUS should give her a medal!
I generally skim but this time I wanted the “easy way” out
I knew one of them had, but sometimes info vannishes from the neurons
Thank you American Hero.
Absolutely.
I do wonder why she wasn't armed with a shotgun or an AR-15. Was she on foot patrol when the call came in?
Where’d you get that? This whole article is about lessons learned by the response to the VT shooter, and how those lessons led to new training, specifically at Ft. Hood and training received by the officer who took down the Ft. Hood shooter. Nobody’s talking about going to school at VT.
Twenty years ago I was discussing the differences between Mulim and Western culture with a Pakistani co-worker.
He asked me why Muslim planes never got hijacked.
When I said I didn’t know, he said “Because the Muslim pilot would crash the plane rather than allow the hijacker to succeed.”
While I took that statement with a grain of salt, we need to understand the different way these people think in order to fight them effectively.
Being docile and wanting to compromise only emboldens the jihadists.
I believe they used the horror at VT to teach new techniques.
VT continues to insist that their campus be ‘gun free’.
The idiocy is mindboggling.
She doesn’t have any balls, but she’s an ass kicker.
God bless her and may she have a good recovery and peace in her life.
I say dig the phucker up and feed him to some pigs!
We got to kill it first!
I agree he should be fed to the pigs ...
I think we should let the pigs kill it!
Fox News said he went to Va. Tech last night. Where do you think that goofy black and white picture came from?
I hope that the MSM is not going to badmouth Officer Munley and call her a ‘21st Century Crusader’.
What, no "wait and see" Columbine-style response? I always find it sad to see cops on TV who say their overriding priority is to make it home each night unharmed. To me, that's a sign that you need to find a different job.
Coming from a family with several members in law enforcement, my family members' uniform belief was that they wanted to protect and serve. They understood the risks, but felt they were worth taking. Their overriding concern was to confront criminal behavior and stop it, even at risk to themselves. They were not reckless cops, but they would not stand by and listen to people getting shot at.
