Krugman: It's Time For The WPA

Joe Weisenthal
Nov. 6, 2009, 12:08 PM

We wondered if Paul Krugman would use this morning's 10.2% unemployment reading as an excuse to call for another stimulus.

Indeed:

You can make a pretty good case that just employing a lot of people directly would be a lot more cost-effective; the WPA and CCC cost surprisingly little given the number of people put to work. Think of it as the stimulus equivalent of getting the middlemen out of the student loan program.

So why aren’t we doing this? Politics, of course: government is the problem, not the solution, even when it is, you know, the solution, and cheaper than running things through the private sector.

Krugman, you can go pick grapes in California and live in your car. Eat beans everyday, when you can get ‘em.

The liberals’ answer to everything: more government, more spending, more regulation.

The WPA did not work during the Depression. The stimulus did not work in 2009. Has Krugman been drinking too much again?

My daddy (r.i.p.) used to tell jokes about the wpa and ccc.
One was about a guy who broke his arm while working for the wpa.
It seems he fell while he was leaning on a shovel
and the termites ate the handle out from under him.

Krugman isn't in favor of the CCC.

Krugman is in favor of the CCCP.

And this guy is an economist.

If you need a bridge built, you could hire a contractor to build it. He’ll go out and hire the craftsmen he needs.

Or you could build a new agency to build a camp to recruit a bunch of people who have never built a bridge to come and build it. Meanwhile, the contractor sits idle and his craftsmen are on the dole.

Earlier today, I left a comment on the NYT post (it was, surprisingly, approved) and posted about this:

http://24ahead.com/paul-krugman-promotes-wpa-why-not-simply-enforce-our-immigra

I also sent him a tweet:

http://twitter.com/24AheadDotCom/status/5485081611

Since so few people send him tweets, he might see that.

You the reader can do things like this too, and it would be a good idea. Whenever someone uses unemployment to push their agenda, respond by asking them why they won’t support simply enforcing our immigration laws. That will make it more difficult for them to use unemployment to push their agenda, and some of them might crack and start supporting enforcement.
