Shep was just answering criticism that he wouldn't say the soldier's name until he got confirmation from the Pentagon. However, if a white guy shoots up some place, he has no problem saying their name over and over and flashing pictures. Anyway, it would be good to get this info confirmed first but if other stations are naming him...

When I Google-newsed the name “Malik Nadal Hasan” and sorted the results by date I noticed something peculiar: Just about every story was about 8 minutes old - except one. BBC had published a story with his name TWO HOURS PRIOR to any other news agency. Am I supposed to believe that no US news agency had that information?
Highly unlikely, IMO. My guess is somebody asked them to hold off.

It is much more important to ensure you have it absolutely right, confirmed 3 or 4 ways before you put it out.
People will not excuse, nor should they, a journalist's not getting it right, just so they can do it right now.
