Recent converts would be eager to display some allegiance (if that is the proper word) and, if this guy had a radical in his home mosque, he could have been convinced to do something that he ordinarily would not have. I do not make that statement necessarily in connection with this tragedy because I do not have enough information to make that connection. I am typing in generalities in response to your comment.

You need to be fairly bright to make it to field grade officer.
One would expect his superiors would have concerns.
Before Fox announced the name, they said it was well known this officer opposed going to Iraq, Afghanistan....something along that line.
Ironically Fox just said he was a mental health official, possibly doctor.
