IN September 1962, amidst a growing public debate about the possibility of Britain joining the European Community, the Labour leader Hugh Gaitskell told his partys conference: We must be clear about this: it does mean, if this is the idea, the end of Britain as an independent European state. It means the end of a thousand years of history.
With each passing decade the wisdom of his words has become ever more apparent as our nationhood has been systematically demolished by the insidious process of European integration.
The drive by the Eurocrats to impose the Lisbon Treaty has made a mockery of democracy.
The Labour Government promised the British electorate a referendum but disgracefully reneged on that pledge. Hugh Gaitskell would have been outraged by Browns refusal to keep his word.
In his great 1962 speech he said that British people had to be consulted about their future in Europe. The belief that the political élite knew best, he argued, was an odious piece of hypocritical, supercilious, arrogant rubbish.
The end of the fight against Lisbon was further confirmed by David Camerons abandonment yesterday of his plan to hold a referendum on it if the Tories come to power.
...We will lose any vestige of control over our borders, our justice system and our foreign policy. Britain will become nothing more than an outlying province of the European empire.
Our national embassies will be soon be superseded by those of the EU, while our Army will be subsumed within the new European Defence Force. EU control of all environmental policy will mean sweeping new regulations on everything from bin collections to petrol prices.

Hugh Gaitskell said that!! Wow!!! He and Enoch Powell in a sense were kindred spirits.
Yes, but they fall on deaf ears.
They, like we, have bought the myth that politicians are leaders. They, like we, are wrong. At best politicians are merely public servants, at worst they are self serving crooks.
"But the real treachery has been committed by Gordon Brown. The demise of a once- great nation has arrived without a vote being cast or a bullet fired."
This is very sad. I think the same group would sell us out also and are trying.
What Napoleon and Hitler could not accomplish by force of arms, the British elite accomplished by deceit.
Tragic indeed to see this once-great nation, which spawned a great empire, reduced to “nothing more than an outlying province of the European empire.”
But is such a fate undeserved? There is, I believe, an inescapable “natural law of nations.” Haven’t the British people themselves lost their greatness? Isn’t Winston Churchill called The LAST Lion?
Living in the glass house that is America, I’m reluctant to throw stones. The lessons of Britain’s fall from greatness should compel us to look beneath the “bad politician” symptoms, and find the underlying disease. A platform of “defending our sovereignty” might be like trying to cure a brain tumor with aspirin.
I love it when people blame something in progress for one half of a century on leaders. Where do these leaders come from? Why has the public failed to replace them?
'Cause it's the public that supports this movement. It's the British public that does not care any longer about 1,000 years of its history. Much like so many Americans --- a majority, judging by the last election --- do not care about our proud history and the foundations on which this country stands.
especially if they blame them for robbing france and germany.
