Great TV: MSNBC’s Chris Matthews Visibly Frustrated After Being Taunted for Leg Tingle
Newsbusters ^ | 11/4/2009 | Scott Whitlock

MSNBC’s Chris Matthews on Tuesday night got visibly annoyed with radio host Mark Williams for daring to bring up the Hardball host’s famous assertion that Barack Obama gave him a "thrill" up his leg. After Matthews goaded Williams and suggested he didn’t know the name of the Republican leadership in Congress, Williams paraphrased, "Chris, you're making my legs tingle!"

Matthews, who only seconds before had been smiling as he mocked the host, became flustered: "See, this is- this is. I’m going to- What do you mean? How is your leg? What do you mean? Your leg’s tingling? I don’t get what you mean- what you mean." After Williams repeated himself, Matthews shot back: "What do you mean?"

Earlier in the segment, the radio personality cited the Republican gubernatorial victories in New Jersey and Virginia as a revolt from big government. Matthews derided that as the "wing nut line" and barked, "There are some people that believe that all their lives. They've always believed the black helicopters are coming. They've always believed somebody's coming to get their guns. They've always hated government."

Clearly, Matthews can dish out the insults, but can’t take any jibes of his own.

A transcript of the November 4 segment, which aired at 12:02am EDT, follows:

CHRIS MATTHEWS: Let’s begin with Willie Brown, the former mayor of San Francisco and radio talk show host Mark Williams. Both of you, first of all, let’s go through the headline of the evening, everybody’s going to see it, the double header, Virginia and New Jersey, the governorships, especially that nitecap in Jersey where the Democrat, Corzine, spent so much of his own money, his own wealth, both for the Senate race and later as governor and still got yanked out of there. I’ll give you the first joy of the night, Mark Williams, I know you are going to love to bite into this baby. So, go for it.

MARK WILLIAMS: Well, I think what you're seeing is the first two and a half victories of what's going to be serious change in this country's direction in 2010.

MATTHEWS: What's the two and a half? What's the half?

WILLIAMS: The half is we managed to blow out that fake Republican in upstate New York.

MATTHEWS: But, that race looks like, Mark, as we're speaking, it looks like the Democrat is ahead there

WILLIAMS: You know, I'll be happy if we walk away from that race with having slapped the Republican leadership that sat behind closed doors and selected a Working Family Party, ACORN party candidate and ran them as a token Republican. The number one problem we have in this country right now is we no longer have two parties representing two ideologies. And New York is a machine party state. You're seeing with neck and neck in New York City, too, I think you're seeing what happens when the citizenry becomes engaged and actually pays attention and goes out and votes their conscience. I don't think this is a Republican or Democrat thing, I think this is an ideological thing. People feel that their country and rights are threatened by oppressive atmosphere that they’re rejecting.

MATTHEWS: I know the line. Mark, I know the line. I know the line. Okay, that’s the wing nut line. But, let me ask you this about- Because people who believe that-

WILLIAMS: That’s not a wingnut line. Read the Constitution.

MATTHEWS: There are some people that believe that all their lives. They’ve always believed the black helicopters are coming. They’ve always believed somebody's coming to get their guns. They’ve always hated government.

WILLIAMS: What black helicopter? We had massive turnouts in these elections, maybe 60 percent. That means people became engaged. They think for themselves.

MATTHEWS: Yeah. But the paranoia- what you're spewing now- What you’re spewing right now, you would have spewed 30, 40 years ago and a lot of people who believe it now would have believed it then.

WILLIAMS: Paranoia? Paranoia?

MATTHEWS: This crazy paranoia of government.

WILLIAMS: Paranoia? 11 guys in New York sat behind closed doors and picked an ACORN candidate. That’s not paranoia. That’s what happened.

MATTHEWS: Different point. Different point. No, see, I only went after you when you went into your what do you call it, boilerplate PR. Just stick to the facts then. And we will try to analyze these elections. You know your business. Lets stick to what happened last night and stop giving speeches. Mayor Brown-

WILLIAMS: I just told you what happened.

MATTHEWS: No, you went further, sir. And let’s stick to the facts.

...

MATTHEWS: Do you know the names of the Republican leaders of Congress?

WILLIAMS: Yes.

MATTHEWS: Name them.

WILLIAMS: I’m not going to single out one Republican leader.

MATTHEWS: I don’t think you know their names, Mark.

WILLIAMS: I will tell you for rank-and-file Republicans, they’re not being represented. Do you think, for example- Do you think-

WILLIAMS: Mark, you don’t know their names. You don't even know who you're talking about. Okay, let’s go.

WILLIAMS: Do you think that Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi- I love trying to talk with you, Chris.

MATTHEWS: You know Democrats because you're always attacking them. By the way, his name is Mitch McConnell.

MATTHEWS: Chris, you're making my legs tingle!

WILLIAMS: See, this is- this is. I’m going to- What do you mean? How is your leg? What do you mean? Your leg’s tingling? I don’t get what you mean- what you mean.

WILLIAMS: You're making my leg tingle, Chris!

MATTHEWS: What do you mean?

WILLIAMS: I'm trying to have a serious conversation with you. I understand I'm a token, you know, the token on this show tonight.

MATTHEWS: No, there's always room for somebody like you on this show. I make my living on guys like you.

We should ALWAYS be insulting him about that. It breaks his focus —it’s effective. We should be trundling out all manner of bi-curious stuff in the book; antique-shop stuff, exfoliation, Richard Simmons lines, comments about Barbara Streisand records —EVERYTHING.

He’s a loudmouth and he said it, and he who lives by the sword.....

WOW! That REALLY bi*ch-slapped him didn’t it..?!

I think anyone who does NOT do this in the future with him is OUT OF THEIR MIND. It’s obviously the Chris Matthews attack “off” switch.

But he does shake off the effects eventually, so you have to follow up more stuff —Castro street, “quietly opening an antique shop with a sinewy, mustached Capricorn” —that kind of stuff..!

It’ll really shut him up..! FIGHT DIRTY!

Oh that’s it! Your making my leg tingle will the line that will haunt his career from now on. I know Rush and alot of conservatives has teased with the remark, but this is the first time anyone has actually addressed Mathews about it and it really really bothered him. We can’t let up on it. He has to be constantly reminded that he is the Tingle Joke!

i think it’s funny that Chris Matthews fell for it... got taken on point because of the leg comment... but Mark Williams should have known the names of the Republican leaders... come on! we need sharp-thinking people on our side going on these shows... young sharp-thinking people... people who think like Dick and Lynn Cheney... William Bennett... we’re grooming two at home...

Mark Williams came to our Tea Party event tonight in OKC, don't know if he was on the Tea Party Bus or flew in. He was great and told us of that interview.

Thanks for posting the video. Mark is a real Patriot, nice man.

Matthews comes across like a drunk.

Yeah, like the obnoxious Irish drunk who has more soaked his brains in so much alcohol that all he has left is artificial bravado.

I was at the OKC Tea Party tonight, too, and agree that Mark’s presentation was great. I was not expecting such good speeches and entertainment.

He's your typical extreme far left (wannabe bully) wuss who likes to try and browbeat his guests (especially those he opposes) but like all self-impressed, pseudo-intellectual frauds, as soon as you push back or show them for the morons they really are, they not only get flustered, but completely collapse.

Yep, as someone so appropriately remarked, he got "bitch-slapped" but good. lol

“MATTHEWS: Chris, you’re making my legs tingle! “

guy had to be dreaming of this line as soon as he knew he was booked, in case the interview went south too fast.

How many people do you think were there, 2 to 3K?.

It was so dark, I could not see everyone and I was up on the top steps. The entertainment was great, and I am so impressed with the young MC Toby Pedafore. I think that is his last name. He is an up and coming political star. I told him so the last Tea Party.

Now to look for an Insurance Commissioner. We got work to do. I am very impressed with Brogdon.

This article is making my leg tingle.

Matthews is angry because he knows that his tingly quote will be one of the only things people remember about his career. It will follow him into old age. So, when someone uses it openly, it hits this nerve. The correct medical term is ‘The tingly nerve’.
