American voters have delivered a sharp rebuke to Barack Obama by rejecting Democratic candidates in Virginia, the swing state that helped deliver him the White House almost exactly a year ago.

Bob McDonnell, the Republican candidate, overwhelmed his Democratic opponent Creigh Deeds, for whom Mr Obama had campaigned, to become Virginia governor. Republicans also won the races in Virginia for lieutenant governor and attorney general.

It’s sad when we have to rely on foreign papers for better political analysis on our own races.

Didn’t they get the “talking points”? I thought that Dems. were saying that these elections were not any reflection on Obama or Democrats in general????? The party line is that these are just local elections, and don’t read other meaning into them??????

White House officials insisted that Mr Obama would be watching a basketball game and would not pay any attention to the results coming in.

More like Sesame Street and he won't say a word until Axelrod tells him what to say.

Yes, isn’t it? But a lot of the American media are reluctant to report all of the implications because one of them is a rebuke to themselves. They’ll spin it away, but it’s a fact.

From your link, here's clear definition of the word "pathetic:"

White House officials insisted that Mr Obama would be watching a basketball game and would not pay any attention to the results coming in.
