American voters have delivered a sharp rebuke to Barack Obama by rejecting Democratic candidates in Virginia, the swing state that helped deliver him the White House almost exactly a year ago.
Bob McDonnell, the Republican candidate, overwhelmed his Democratic opponent Creigh Deeds, for whom Mr Obama had campaigned, to become Virginia governor. Republicans also won the races in Virginia for lieutenant governor and attorney general.

Didn’t they get the “talking points”? I thought that Dems. were saying that these elections were not any reflection on Obama or Democrats in general????? The party line is that these are just local elections, and don’t read other meaning into them??????

Yes, isn’t it? But a lot of the American media are reluctant to report all of the implications because one of them is a rebuke to themselves. They’ll spin it away, but it’s a fact.
And maybe a sharp repuke too. It seems the hopey-changey has given the Virginia electorate a bad case of the O1No1 Donkey flu.
White House officials insisted that Mr Obama would be watching a basketball game and would not pay any attention to the results coming in.
