Half Of US Kids Will Get Food Stamps, Study Says (Houston we have a problem)

CHICAGO (AP) - Nearly half of all U.S. children and 90 percent of black youngsters will be on food stamps at some point during childhood, and fallout from the current recession could push those numbers even higher, researchers say. The estimate comes from an analysis of 30 years of national data, and it bolsters other recent evidence on the pervasiveness of youngsters at economic risk. It suggests that almost everyone knows a family who has received food stamps, or will in the future, said lead author Mark Rank, a sociologist at Washington University in St. Louis.

"Your neighbor may be using some of these programs but it's not the kind of thing people want to talk about," Rank said.

The analysis was released Monday in the November issue of Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine. The authors say it's a medical issue pediatricians need to be aware of because children on food stamps are at risk for malnutrition and other ills linked with poverty.

"This is a real danger sign that we as a society need to do a lot more to protect children," Rank said.

Food stamps are a Department of Agriculture program for low-income individuals and families, covering most foods although not prepared hot foods or alcohol. For a family of four to be eligible, their annual take-home pay can't exceed about $22,000.

According to a USDA report released last month, 28.4 million Americans received food stamps in an average month in 2008, and about half were younger than age 18. The average monthly benefit per household totaled $222.

Does that count as reparations?

"In the United States, the percentage of overweight or obese children has doubled over the past 30 years to 25 per cent of the under-19 population."

50% of children are on foodstamps, 25% are obese, I'm wondering how much overlap there is in those numbers.

about a month ago, I was in this local super-market, and this black transexual was hitting on me, and was offering to buy me groceries with his\her food stamps.

They have defined the “need level” or the “poverty level” so high that a majority of kids’ families now qualify? Yes, they are buying Democrat votes with government handouts.

The key of course here is “at some point”. You’ve got 18 years of statistical “childhood” it’s not too hard to figure that over the course of that time some temporary bad thing might happen that puts the family on the dole for a couple of months. That doesn’t mean we’ve got a horrible poverty problem, just means that 18 years is a long time and feces occurs.

That's a crock. The only reason they are at risk of malnutrition is because the "mothers" do not know how to cook. I firmly believe in a mandatory course for food stamp recipients covering basic cooking and budgeting skills.

That was my thought on it too.

I’m a conservative, but when my ex-POS left me with two babies, I was on food stamps for a few months until I got a decent job and could afford it on my own. I am grateful that safety net was there and I have more than paid it back since then.

I would say they’ve done their job very well b/c socialism and a society of needy people is what they want...a helpless, hapless populace beholden to them IS the goal.
