He was lucky to walk away unhurt. Most ejections result in back and neck injuries, or leg and ankle injuries. If he had been in a jet aircraft going several hundred miles per hour, he would not have escaped without injury.

The location of the eject handles are well known to pilots.

Putting in extra steps means extra time when there may well be less than zero available time for dithering.
