The USS New York was scheduled to sail up the Hudson River Monday. The $1 billion ship was built in Louisiana with about 7.5 tons of World Trade Center steel melted down and used in the bow.
As part of its journey, the ship is scheduled to stop when it nears ground zero, where first responders, families of Sept. 11 victims and the public have been invited to watch a 21-gun salute.
Rosaleen Tallon, whose firefighter brother Sean Tallon died in the attacks, planned to be among them.
"I think it's a really nice tribute," she said, adding that her brother, who also was a Marine, would be proud.
She said she was glad that steel from the fallen towers would be used in a new form.
"It's a transformation of it from something really twisted and ugly," Tallon said. "I'm proud that our military is using that steel."
Lt. Cmdr. Colette Murphy, a Navy spokeswoman, said she was excited for those serving on board to see how the city would welcome them.

Sunday 9 to 12 is it for the weekend. Hmmmm. I was thinking of taking the kids to the revamped Intrepid on the same day. Might be going myself this week.
Interesting that they could build the ship faster than they could build back even one third of one tower.
1.2 Billion dollars, WOW! Let’s see, there are 1/3 of a billion people in this country, of which probably half pay taxes, so my part would be about $7.20. Now THAT’s bang for the buck!
More sad than interesting. The Navy doesn’t have (as much) politics as the crap involved in the WTC. We put on our uniforms and do our jobs as best we can with what we have.
Members of the general public wishing to tour the ship should:
- Arrive early as lines my be long, especially on the Sunday, Nov. 8.
- Enter at West 46th Street and 12th Avenue (by the Intrepid).
- Bring a photo ID (adults).
- Wear comfortable shoes.
No large packages or backpacks will be permitted.

The USS New York is a first of it’s kind ship made from the steel of the WTC and specifically suited to attacking and killing terrorists. That boat says to the world that when you mess with America, we will design a new weapon specifically designed to kick your ass, give it a name that will remind everyone why it was build and then we’ll use the ruins of the things you destroyed to build it. If you attack us then we will build a weapon that is optimized to kill you, and then we’ll use it on you.
That boat is truly awesome.
