Janet Napolitano: Legalization a hard sell
Capitol News Company ^ | 5/19/09 | JOSH GERSTEIN |

As immigrants’ rights groups are pressing President Barack Obama to step up efforts at comprehensive reform this year, one prominent member of Obama’s cabinet is acknowledging that the economic downturn has made legalization of illegal immigrants tougher to sell to the American public.

“When unemployment is up, anything that looks like you’re taking jobs away from …people who are lawfully here—citizens of the United States—is going to meet a lot of resistance,” Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said during an exchange with reporters Tuesday morning.

The homeland security chief and former Arizona governor said the economic slump may also have eased some anti-immigration feeling ...

However, Napolitano said the economic factors combined to put an additional hurdle in the path of immigration reform advocates. “In balancing those things, I think it makes it more difficult,” she said.

Napolitano’s concession was noteworthy chiefly because White House officials have declined in recent weeks to acknowledge that economic distress could undermine support for immigration reform.

In fact, the White House and immigration reform advocates have been making a concerted effort to argue that changes to the immigration laws will actually aid the economy by boosting tax revenues.

Napolitano already knows that as many as 4% of all illegal aliens are also on the FBI "terrorist list".

I would like to know why the administration condones the continued flaunting of American law by ILLEGAL IMMAGRANTS adn the coaching done by the Mexican government. All while inferring that the Mexican gun problem is caused by weapons going south which is a BIG LIE.

Our government is bald faced lying to us, and I wonder how much more the American people will take of this abuse.

So, if we assume that every illegal here is taking a job, then if we were to eliminate all the illegals America would have a 3 million job surplus.

{Yes, I realize that doesn’t factor in minors and unemployed illegals... ie it’s a bad assumption.}

About 30 million illegals , many more than there are people out of work, actually if half the illegals left America could go back to work.

The evidence presented before john McCain's committee years ago said 30 million, the other day Mexico said currently, 350,000 a year were going north.

Oh, OK..! Amenesty + abortion = we all get rich..!!!

STEPHANOPOULOS: Hundreds of millions of dollars to expand family planning services. How is that stimulus?

PELOSI: Well, the family planning services reduce cost. They reduce cost. The states are in terrible fiscal budget crises now and part of what we do for children’s health, education and some of those elements are to help the states meet their financial needs. One of those - one of the initiatives you mentioned, the contraception, will reduce costs to the states and to the federal government.

STEPHANOPOULOS: So no apologies for that?

In a letter dated February 2004, no less an authority than Arizona Senator John McCain recognized that Border Patrol apprehension figures demonstrated that "almost four million people crossed our borders illegally 2002" (read McCain's letter) – experts on the subject agree that illegal crossings have only increased since then.

The Tucson sector Border Patrol union local 2544 on the number of illegal aliens in our nation: "There are currently 15 to 20 million illegal aliens in this country by many estimates, but the real numbers could be much higher and the numbers increase every day because our borders are not secure (no matter what the politicians tell you - don't believe them for a second)". (Visit the local's website).

In agreement with Senator McCain, our counters are calibrated to reflect an increase of 10,000 total additional illegal aliens added to the United States population each day.

The counters reflect figures that include illegal aliens successfully entering our nation combined with those who overstay their visas.

We are of the educated opinion that we are conservatively low in our estimation.

In a one hour documentary, Immigrant Nation - Divided Country originally aired in October 2004, CNN estimated that "7 – 20 million" people were "living in this country illegally".

Immigrants' "rights" groups make me want to puke. The illegals they represent have utterly no relationship to foreign nationals in the country legally.

If you want to obey the law, which includes entering the country legally, respect our laws, language and culture, I welcome you with open arms.

This "immigration" debate has really gotten mixed up. It is unfair to many good people that the word immigrants has been redefined as meaning illegals. It's a very different thing.

You got it diagnosed accurately - that includes non-employables like children, etc.

And it doesn’t consider incompatible skill sets for empoyment. America doesn’t need 20 million leaf blowers.

“I’m just wondering when America will get fed up with the jobs issue, the identity theft issue, the gangs issue, and the general dismantling of the country issue(s) and demand something be done.”

It won’t as long the media, the Democrats, the RINO elites, the Chamber of Commerce control the agenda and exploit illegal aliens for votes and cheap labor.
