If no buyers come forward, the village will demolish the houses, which many residents say hold an historic value.

Fine. Then pony up $1 per house. It shouldn't be that hard, now should it?

Sure. Buy this old house for 1 dollar and then pay a fortune to relocate it. What a deal. Clearly there is no land deed involved in the purchase.

$1 for the house, quarter million for the lot to put it on, and a like amount to move it. And dont’ forget its “historical” value. A commission will regulate and enforce every detail of the building’s rehab. No thanks.

If Valerie Jarrett won’t bite for a dollar then somethings really wrong with this investment.

Some friends of ours bought a large, old farmhouse in a similar situation and got it for a next-to-nothing bid. Of course, they had to buy a lot large enough to accomodate this house. Then they had to have it moved. Then, to their surprise, they learned that the country considered it new construction which meant that it had to be up to code. However, since it was a historical building, nothing could be done which altered its historical character, meaning that everything they did cost about 10x what it should. By the time, they got done, they realized that they could have built a similar but brand-new house for only a few thousand dollars more, a few thousand headaches less.
