The mix of the population there is about 50/50 Russians and Tatars. The Tatars are a Turkic people, very westernized, secular Muslims. They have dark hair and are olive complected. But some Tatars can only be distinguished from Russians when you hear them speak. I met some wonderful people there. It’s rather Midwestern in character.
