SHOCK! Epidemic of pneumonic plague in Ukraine? (updated at 05:39 pm) MIGnews.com.ua

Ministry of Health has not established the exact diagnosis of the epidemic disease in the western regions of Ukraine. Health Minister Vasyl Knyazevich has given information about spread of diseases in the Ternopil, Ivano-Frankivsk and Lviv Regions today at the meeting of Cabinet of Ministers.

According to the Minister, the World Health Organization is ready to render assistance to Ukrainian experts and the Ministry of Health in order to establish the cause of death and development of disease flu in the Ternopil, Ivano-Frankivsk and Lviv Regions.

"We are working at receiving the vaccine against influenza A (H1N1) also", - said Vasily Knyazevich and asked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to render assistance.

Answering question of Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko about the definition of the specific nature of the disease, the head of the Ministry of Health said: "The nature of infections is viral one. But at the moment it is not defined, is it the Californian influenza H1N1, or it is our seasonal influenza. To date, there is no precise diagnosis."

According to the Minister of Health, to date, 12 adults have died in the Ternopil Region. "There are problems, people of working age 20-45 years are sick, there is a problem with pregnant women (we have the death in the Ivano-Frankivsk and Ternopil Regions), 17 patients remain in the grave condition, 4 of them have artificial pulmonary ventilation", - said Vasily Knyazevych.

I’m leaning to a Russian cause for this. They hate the Ukranians and Winter’s coming. They are looking for a way to reduce sending gas to the Ukraine.

You are absolutely ignorant of history. More than half of the people who live in the Ukraine thinks of themselves as Russian but living outside Russia.

Thanks for all your effort DvdMom. So, if I’m reading all the posts correctly, it looks like 191,000+ people falling ill in less than two weeks?

I don’t see what the panic is about. 20 people died out of 10000 infected. We lose more than that celebrating a basketball championship.

Yushchenko called on to help Ukraine: Unknown virus is killing people

Publication time: 1 November 2009, 23:39

In last 24 hours, an unknown virus (presumed pneumonic plague) infected another 37 thousand and killed 12 more people. The authorities deny that this is pneumonic plague, and insist that people die from influenza, pneumonia and ARI.

This is a bit controversial but I have seen the term “pneumonic plague” in more than one location used interchangeably with flu in discussions of ILI outside of the US. Does anyone know why that is? I know there was a pneumonic plague issue in China earlier this year and an entire town got quarantined. I hope I am putting this on the correct thread. Perhaps there is a translation issue here.

Ukraine’s flu fatalities rise to 71 - premier

14:4803/11/2009
http://en.rian.ru/exsoviet/20091103/156696659.html

KIEV, November 3 (RIA Novosti) - An outbreak of seasonal and swine flu, which hit Ukraine last week, has claimed the lives of 71 people, the country’s prime minister said on Tuesday.

“Seventy-one people have died of flu as of today,” Yulia Tymoshenko said reporting to parliament on the spread of flu and acute respiratory illness.

The death toll from the A/H1N1 virus has not changed since Monday’s 22 fatalities.

The health ministry said on Monday 255,000 flu cases had been reported in the country, with 15,000 receiving treatment in hospital.

The government has imposed quarantines in nine western provinces to curb the spread of swine flu, which originated in the Tirnopol Region, closed all education establishments in Kiev and obliged people to wear medical masks in all catering establishments, shops and social services facilities across Ukraine.

Tymoshenko and other top officials met a cargo of 300,000 doses of the Tamiflu medication against swine flu from Switzerland at an airport on Sunday.

Slovakia closed two of the five crossings on the border with western Ukraine on Monday over the flu scare, according the AFP. Hundreds of thousands of people pass through the border checkpoints every day.

However, Tymoshenko, who insisted there is no swine flu pandemic in the country, but instead an ordinary seasonal flu outbreak, said on Tuesday “the situation has stabilized,” as the growth of flu cases has slowed down somewhat.

Tymoshenko earlier criticized drug stores for shortages of medicines and blamed “media hysteria” and politicians’ populist statements for causing the deficit. She pledged further measures to curb the flu, as well as the panic.

Later on Tuesday, parliament approved the allocation of 1 billion hryvnias ($125 million) on measures to fight swine and seasonal flu.

Ukraine closes all schools to fight swine flu

By YANA SEDOVA and SIMON SHUSTER (AP) – 18 hours ago
http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5gZEiW5KQGUG6UipPRvyy8rMDXlqgD9BNIGK00

KIEV, Ukraine — Urging its citizens not to panic, Ukraine on Monday closed the nation’s schools for a week to avoid the spread of swine flu and suggested that nightclubs, cinemas and food markets in the west also shut down.

The World Health Organization said Monday there was no evidence that Ukraine had a bad outbreak of swine flu but at the government’s request it had sent a health team there to help the country cope.

“But this is not an indication that the situation is severe,” said WHO spokeswoman Liuba Negru. “The information we have gotten (from the government), we have to double-check it and make sure it is real, evidence-based information.”

Ukraine’s Health Ministry said Monday that 70 people in the nation of 40 million have died of flu, but did not say how many of those deaths were related to swine flu. Worldwide, outbreaks of regular seasonal flu claim 50,000 lives each year.

Nevertheless, all schools have been closed for a week across Ukraine, even in the capital, Kiev, where there have been no confirmed cases of swine flu.

In western Ukraine, local authorities advised people to travel only when necessary, a Health Ministry spokeswoman said.

All outdoor markets have been closed in the western region of Lviv, where the governor also urged cinemas, cafes, nightclubs and theaters to shut down until further notice.

Some observers, including the speaker of the parliament, Vladimir Litvin, suggested that these measures are the result of political wrangling ahead of the country’s presidential election in January. The pivotal vote could overturn the 2004 Orange Revolution that swept a pro-Western government to power.

“We are seeing a political competition to see who will be the first to lead this process (of fighting swine flu),” Litvin said, according to the UNIAN news agency.

Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko met a Swiss shipment of anti-viral drugs at the Kiev airport on Monday.

“The government has declared the situation an epidemic, but there is absolutely no need to panic,” she declared on national television.

Her main rival, President Viktor Yushchenko, said thousands of people were infected and called for assistance from NATO, the European Commission, the United States, Russia and other countries.

Konstantin Bondarenko, director of the Gorshenin Institute, a political consultancy, said that Tymoshenko has the most to lose from public sentiment over the outbreak, as state health officials answer to her.

“Right now all the candidates are weighing their political options, looking around for a theme, and this is a very hot topic right now. The panic is there, and they are acting on it,” Bondarenko said.

After receiving the shipment of 300,000 doses of Tamiflu at Kiev’s Borispol airport, Tymoshenko said her government plans to increase its hoard of the drug by another 300,000 to 950,000 doses.

“This is the supply that will reliably protect Ukraine,” Tymoshenko said, ITAR-Tass news agency reported.

Viktor Yanukovych, the Regions’ Party candidate for the presidency, has not commented on the swine flu uproar. Yanukovych, who was beaten in 2005 by Yushchenko, is leading in the polls with a platform that emphasizes closer ties with Russia.

During the past five years of Yushchenko’s presidency, relations with Moscow reached historic lows. Yushchenko’s approval ratings at home have fallen to single digits in the wake of the economic crisis, which hit Ukraine hard, and years of political gridlock with Tymoshenko.

Associated Press writer Simon Shuster reported from Moscow.
