A Sacramento County jury has awarded $16.5 million to the family of a 28-year-old woman who died after participating in a radio station's water-drinking contest.

Jennifer Strange, a mother of three, died of acute water intoxication in January 2007 after the challenge to see which contestant could drink the most water without using the restroom. A Nintendo Wii video game was the prize for winning the "Hold Your Wee for a Wii" contest.

I heard the original recording —she was groaning, saying things like, “Oh God, I feel like I’m about to die..!”

Well no one really dies from driking water, right? So the two hosts were laughing their head off about it.

GREAT lawyer material...!

I don’t know if this is the same radio station I read about a few weeks ago. I read that people were contacting the radio station, warning them about the danger, and they just laughed it off. They had previously been sued for running the same type of contest. The woman who died should have known better, but they did know better.

They even took calls from people who told the DJs that people can die from ingesting too much water. They kept going.

The combined intelligence of the contestants, the radio hosts, and the people in charge would scarcely add up to a quarter-wit. I hope the amount of the award convinces the idiots in charge to provide adult supervision for their station personnel.

She gave her life to win a Ninetendo Wii? She valued her health and well-being at what, $400? The radio station are idiots and I hate to speak ill of the dead but my heavens...you think she’d have researched the potential adverse health consequences of something like this. Shows what our culture has become...do whatever you have to in order to spoil your kids.

Hopefully the family won't just pi$$ away the settlement, and end up drowning in debt.

I wonder, after reading the article, did they take her to the hospital and try to save her? She must of had plenty of people around when she went into distress. Too bad they couldn’t save her.

Didn’t they have her sign a waiver of responsibility? Of course, that would not absolve the jocks or the station of responsibility and obviously did not.

Di-hydrogen monoxide poisoning is more common than many understand.

Entercom argued that Strange should have known the contest could be dangerous.

Their lawyers actually argued that in Court? Unbelievable!

Allow me to retort:

If a contestant is expected to know that the stunt is dangerous, should not those responsible for holding the contest also know it?

I'd vote against the station as well. Not sure on the 16.0 million though.
