Lindsey Graham frustrated with Guantanamo Bay stalls

When it comes to the thorny issue of Guantanamo, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) is the closest thing President Barack Obama has to an ally on the Republican side of the aisle.

But with the White House’s drive for Congressional approval to close the prison stalled for nearly six months now, Graham is sounding increasingly restless and is even opening a battle with the administration that could be politically damaging to Democrats.

“I’m a bit frustrated. The interaction I was hoping for has kind of come to a standstill,” Graham complained in an interview with POLITICO. “Some of the things being talked about, leaked out of the administration, are not what I had in mind and not what I thought we’d do.”

The South Carolina Republican and former Air Force lawyer said the administration is sowing panic with its protracted indecision over where in the United State it plans to move the Guantanamo detainees and where they’ll be tried.

“Pick a site or pick a process, because all I can tell you right now is the unknown is your biggest enemy,” Graham said. “I want to be a constructive partner. I am one of the few Republicans in favor of closing Guantanamo Bay and starting over….I will help the president make these hard decisions, but only if we make them. We need to start making them.”
