True. Still seriously, why would a 21 year old still go to a high school event like this? They will think they are a loser. I am surprised that homecoming is a big deal in a inner city high school, let alone a gang area.
I think one thing most people don’t realize about gang members is that they are very immature. They seek to be around people they can control by force because they have the power of the gang behind them and this makes them Little Big Man. Morally, they’re non-existent; but in terms of self-preservation, they’re weak individually and they therefore seek to dominate others through their gang membership because they can’t make any progress on their own.
Most of them didn’t graduate from HS or get a GED, they’re losers outside of their druggie circle, and this is one of the reasons they hang around high schools, because they can intimidate these kids easily.
One of my daughters went to a high school in New York where the gang bangers used to hang around outside looking for other black kids (who were not gang bangers) they could beat up on the way to the subway because these kids were actually trying to do something and improve their lives. NYPD finally assigned special officers to protect the decent kids on their way to the subway.
Gang bangers are insecure about themselves. Insecurity at its worst.
Gang bangers have no moral compass. They’re insecure because they know this and they seek refuge in the power of the pack.
But of course that seems to be true in American society as a whole now. People don’t accept individual moral responsibility and they turn all their actions over to a group (an ethnic group, a political group, etc.) that is not acting on the basis of ethics but on the basis of the power to intimidate.
All those people participated and all those people watched because they were dehumanized and incapable of independent moral action. That may sound old-fashioned, but that is what it is, even now in the 21st century.
They should put the City Council in jail with Citizen Arrests.
I no longer believe that is true. I bet they will be treated as heroes by the gang they join in prison.
You nailed it right on the head.
